I dislike shopping online because of identity theft

Well there are a lot of good free vsts out there. I think there's probably a thread of them somewhere round here.

Stores do sell some, it depends entirely on what vsts you're after...for example, Native instrument stuff is quite common in stores that sell electronic music equipment. But EastWest stuff is quite rare to find in stores.
Go online to a store's website you know is close-by and check what they have in stock!

You can get a limited selection in some stores, but you're going to need to get over your identity theft thing if you want to get exactly what you want, at a decent price, with a good enough variety. Especially since shops often up-mark the prices.

Don't even get me started on open-source software.

If you go to Guitar Center or any place nearby that sells music software (Best Buy might even have it), there should be plenty of NI stuff, and a couple other popular ones like maybe Melodyne. But like Dr. D said, it's really difficult to find all the VSTs you need in a physical brick-and-mortar store.

Seriously, though, check out that thread Legion linked. On top of that. TAL makes some really high-quality free software, and you can always browse KVR if you want more. It's entirely possible to make a name for yourself using only free VSTs.

Actually, I've found some amazing free VSTs. I'm sure there's a thread or two about them somewhere around here. Also, as Vafrous said, TAL makes great stuff. I personally love Noisemaker.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of Native Instruments stuff in stores like Sam Ash, but just about anything else is gonna be really hard to find. You're likely going to have to get over your identity theft worries - if it's a website you trust, then you're more than likely not going to get your credentials stolen.

It's really not something to worry about.

I would say this is true, most free vst's are of poor quility (IMO) and when compared to professional vst's they are usually nothing special. But yes, there are some great free vst's out there and I know we have a thread with a bunch of them listed (Legion posted the link).

If you buy vst's straight from the companies website you should have nothing to worry about, I have bought a number of vst's now and have had no problems. I have never seen vsts for sale in the music stores by me and I have rarely seen them in other towns so online shopping is your best (likely only) bet.

When you download a .rar file, you're going to need to get a program to decompress the file. My favorite decompressing software is 7-Zip: http://www.7-zip.org/

Once you install 7-Zip, just right-click on the .rar file and scroll down the the 7-Zip submenu. From there, click on "Extract files...", and then extract.

7-zips great!
after that you just install/ put the dll into where your daw finds vsts by default it should be program files/vst plugins

It's also the store I got FL studio and Music creator 6 from (Which is now upgraded to Sonar)

So ya, they have NI machine and traktor there too, and bunch of pioneer instruments, someday, After I get a job, I'm gonna go check them out :)
