Yes, you can record with Fruity Loops, in more ways than one.

If you want to record in with instruments and/or microphones, you can easily look up tutorials on how to do that (I don't know much about it myself because I use other programs for it, but I have heard people hooking up their instruments to send audio directly into Fruity Loops.

You can also record using the Edison plugin, which takes audio being played into whatever channel Edison is set on.

FL's actually got wonderful recording utilities. The Edison plugin makes it really easy to cut and manipulate audio, and it has this REALLY nice 'multiple-take' feature that lets you loop a bit over and over and over again, record multiple takes, and then compare all of the takes easily and efficiently.

Unfortunately, once you get the audio clips out of Edison and into FL itself, that's where FL stops shining. It treats each and every piece of audio as a sample to be played in its pattern editor, which means you'll end up with an EXTREMELY bloated pattern editor window. Not too much of a problem if you never use the pattern editor, but if you want to throw down some synths, or even just drum grooves, it can get irritating.

For things like rock, I'd recommend Ableton, even if just because it has a really nifty audio-stretching tool that makes it incredibly easy to fix timing mistakes in your recording.

Yea, FL is pretty awesome for recording, well, mainly vocals, not instruments.

If you have Signiture edition you get all these wonderful plugins for vocoding, mixing, slicing, mastering etc. some of those include Edison (For recording and slicing), Slicex (slicing), Hardcore (distrtion) and Vocodex. There's a-lot more effect plugins for recording included in FL rather than the ones mentioned.

From what I've heard, it's good for sampling, but not for recording. If you're looking to record guitars, and actually play along with your track, you're going to have issues. It treats each audio as a triggered clip from what I've heard, which is no use for doing band production. Cubase, Ableton and Reaper do audio very well. Reason does audio well too, but that's only just getting third party plugin support.

I've never had problems recording. But I've only ever recorded vocals. And that works very well for me! You should be able to record with any DAW of your choice. So, choose whatever is easiest to use for you!

probably not best to perpetuate rumors if we haven't necessarily seen it first-hand. ;)

I've seen people working with audio, and I've read up on what it does. I also know that if you want to work with audio you need to buy the second most expensive version, the cheaper versions made for the hobbyist lock you out of using audio entirely, so I disapprove of that.

Cubase is pretty awesome for live audio. I'm still discovering new ways to work the sample editor, where you can cut and slice hitpoints, change the bpm, stretch and shrink select events, and even pitch correct, all within the same window.
DAW: Cubase 6.5, Ableton Live 8
Preferred Genre: Industrial/Trance
Hardware: Schecter Diamond Series Bass, Yamaha Acoustic Guitar, BP355 Effects Pedal, Keystudio 49K Keyboard, Akai APC40, Korg nanoKEY2 25k Keyboard
