Artist name

Postby Mishtar » 22 May 2012 18:27

I'm not that much of an artist and I'm not known at all ;) Which is why it's not a bad idea to think about my "artist name" now.

Basically, I *kinda* wanted to go with Mishtar, as I've used that nickname for a few years now. I wasn't so sure, and just today I noticed that the name is taken on youtube. So I decided to create a completely different, new name.

I sat down and thought about it for like... I dunno, an hour or so.

Something random that came to me was "Coutcoty", or "Coutocoty". I admit I like it, and it would be nice to have such a name, BUT - I really, really want to hear your opinions first!

Dunno. At least to me it sounds a bit awkward. It doesn't roll of the tongue very well. Just my personal opinion. How would it be pronounced? Coo-too-coo-tee?

I don't know, I think Mishtar is a fine name. If by taken you mean there's another brony artist under that alias, then definitely think of a new name. But if that's just another random youtube account, I wouldn't bother. Don't worry about something being taken; look at 'Legion' for instance. Generic name? Check. Used by other musicians? To my knowledge, check. But I still use it regardless, because it's been my internet alias for quite a while and I'm happy with it. If you're insistant on a new name, though, go for it.

Yeah, I have the exact same problem. Not really sure how to go about pronouncing it. I do like it besides that though.

I'd say to stick with something significant, preferably something that reflects you or your yearnings in some way. Gibberish rarely works as a proper artists name. =w=

it looks cool not sure how to pronounce it is the only problem
though is you want to be cool take the first half of one word and the last half of another and then spell it so you cant mispronounce it so it sounds and looks like skrillex or klaypex or something though thats only for complextro artists i dunno what style of music you are doing XD

I've never really concerned myself with screen name and often use a different one for every account or so. Recently though, I've started to use the same name across the board because I want people to recognize me as the same person everywhere. Rainbow_Rage is what I was using at the time so I've stuck with it.

This. Just because a name's been taken doesn't mean you can't try and add something to it to make it stand out more. As legion said, take a look and make sure there aren't any other brony musicians with the name "Mishtar". If there aren't, then try things like "Brony Mishtar", or "Mishtar Music", or even "Mishtar Official". There's really a whole bunch you could come up with.

I also do like the new name, but as many people in this thread are finding out, it's not the easiest thing to figure out how to pronounce. Even I'm having trouble with it and I'm hooked on phonics.

I imagine it as Kaut-ko-ty and the next one as Kaut-koh-koty. So the pronounciation of the second one doesn't bother me. The lack of something however, does.

As long as the name sounds kinda cool, or even half cool, use it. You should give the name it's meaning/legacy/whatnot, not the other way around.

Lol so many replies.

English is not my native language (as you can tell), so I had no idea how to tell you how to pronounce it. But kaut-ko-ty, as natsukashi said, is exactly what's in my mind :D

I dunno now, I guess I'll maybe use that name for something else in the future, probably nothing related to art or Ponies...

Anyway

as far as I know, there's no other brony artist with the name Mishtar. The YT account I mentioned is completely random, so I might just add something to the name. "Mishtar official" is pretty nice, but I'll give it some more thought.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions and opinions, love you all ;)

To truly decide a meaningful name you need to think about your influences and events that happen around you. Take my name for example 'Essper' it comes from a nick name my sister gave me 'Essperman' when coming up with a name I went through many different but when I cme up with 'Essper' I stuck with it because it connects more to myself than being 'cool'

Whereas I chose Unsterblich because it is the defining characteristic of my goal. So yeah, totally a fan of actually putting tought behind artist names and then not gicing two shits if they're taken or not. Competetiveness is boss.

No matter how stupid a name seems when no-one knows of you, if you start making good music people will begin to like the name because they associate it with your awesome music.

Also, don't not use a name because it's not taken on YouTube. Everything is taken on YouTube. Just add 'Music' or 'Official' to the end like EmpUbermensch said.

And for an opinion, I prefer Mishtar. From what little googling I've done it doesn't seem to be used by an active musician either, so it's probably not a bad choice. However, if you like "Coutocoty" better, go with that.

What I did for my name, if you haven't decided to use that one yet, is I took something I had an affinity for-- Computers, and took out an aspect of it as a word-- In this case, Binary. The Bludgeon part just popped in my head later, and ti was catchy, so I kept it =D

For my name, I just made it and kept it because it was original and sound sorta cool. Plus, it can be abbreviated to "Chromatic", which hasn't been done before.

Just find something you think sounds cool and works for you.

While I like Coutcoty for some reason, thanks to this thread I realised such nicknames hold no value or meaning for me, and Mishtar is like my child :D It's a part of me, I want it to grow and perhaps to become something people will associate with amazing music. One day, anyway.

It's also really cool to hear all of your stories ;)

Thanks again!
