tho I think I got the hang of it. But I'm only on a 25key-keyboard so I couldn't complete the circle.

EDIT: Deff got the hang of it.

Congratulations! I've been studying the circle of fifths for... 11 years now.

Still don't understand it.

Is it really anything else than that every note 5 notes (halfnotes included) is harmonous relative to the previous and forthcoming note? I do not believe that there is another trick to it. The reason that it's a circle is because it spans enough octaves to make 12 divisible by 5 I guess~

Or wait. Halfway through the circle it stops being five notes between and is instead six notes between each harmonous note. Oh well whatever. Maybe I didn't get the hang of it. Maybe people with formal music training knows too much so I can just sit here and be stup and don't give 2 fucks about any nuances and complexity that the circle involves! What I got out from it is that each note is harmonous relative to the previous and forthcoming note. Possibly to every note in the circle, can't be arsed to check that. =w=

They way to go around the circle is the next Key's root will be the 5th note of the previous scale (I suck a terminology so let me know if that doesn't make any sense). For example staring on C major, the next root will be the 5th note of the C major scale, G. Then the 5th note of the G major scale is D and so on.

The circle of fourths (same circle but in the other direction) works the same way but now you use the 4th note of each scale to move onto the next one.

The note's relative position to each other can be used to easily visualize certain things. For example, the note's directly adjacent to the current key (in addition to the current note) are the root notes for the major chords in that key.

I hope that was understandable

I guess I'm more used to acoustic musicians so there's a certain level of theory knowledge that's just taken for granted because you have to know it to competently play your instrument. That and people often have at least some level of instruction if they play an instrument and that is likely to include theory.

It's a lot easier and cheaper to get into. It took me hours to get a sound out my trumpet first learning and many years to get good sound quality over a large range. I'm not saying electronic musicians are any less skilled at a high level, but at a beginner level it is easier to pick up some software and make a cool sound than it is to grab an instrument and sound good.

Then there's also cost. A half decent trumpet will run you a couple hundred dollars and a high-end one like mine is about 2 grand. Trumpets are also one of the cheapest instruments. There is plenty of decent software for free or dirt-cheap and pirating it is also easier than stealing an instrument if you're going to go that route.

- Well that was a bit of in irrelevant ramble

And then you learn about what happens when you try to do the same thing with thirds, and you hate music.

I definitely want to go and get a journal now. I have some, but they're probably still in boxes because I just moved and have yet to unpack a good deal of it. On one hand, I totally agree with this guy, but on the other hand, I also get the feeling that this is mainly directed towards people who have a bit of technical knowledge in music, like some theory and the ability to use your software to make the music that's in your head. I still need to understand mine, and learn some more theory before I can go making songs. At least I think...

You don't need theory, as Makkon could attest to. It just makes it easier for your music to go directly from brain to DAW, without needing to feed it back through your ears first :D

But I can't hardly do anything with my DAW in the first place, probably cause I don't have any good VSTs or instruments to play with in there, and it's ACID so I can't find much in the way of tutorials or advice.
Plus, Makkon's just cool like that, I don't think my mind works in the right way to be able to just come up with cool stuff with no structure. I dunno, maybe i'm just not experienced enough.

Alternatively, you could just do what I do:

1. Smash face on keyboard
2. Post results
3. ???
4. Profit!

This is directed at the people who know how to use their DAW and can complete tracks without much trouble. You first priority as a 'new' producer is to learn your DAW.
