Well, you're currently giving people a picture of the key signature and saying 'it starts on X'...many people here haven't got that great a music theory knowledge, so even reading a stave is alien to them.
But a lot of them understand a piano reel, or simple A B C D etc, so for them, explain without key sigs!
For example, do what you're doing underneath that: giving them intervals! Semitones/tones (or half/whole steps) are a good way of explaining as you don't need that big a knowledge to get it!
