I hope that song sounds as rave-y as it looks haha

But honestly each DAW has different positives and negatives to it, use whatever works best for you (which obviously isn't the same for everyone) - trying new ones can definitely be a good way to broaden your horizons and augment your musical understand but don't feel pressured to use any specefic one, so long as you're not using something like Garageband which in the long-run is too limiting to be useful.

What I do is compose my whole track minus samples in one pattern, export each track of the pattern, import them into Pro Tools and then add all vox and effects and stuff in Pro Tools.

Probably a terrible idea but hey, it works for me.

It's actually my remix in the first remix war. So pretty much the opposite of rave-y, heh.

I plan on learning Ableton Live next, but I'm not sure when would be best to do that. I probably just need to practice making music for awhile instead of jumping from DAW to DAW learning them.

I started off with Reason a couple months back but being completely new to the producing scene I eventually gave up on it finding it a living hell to work with. A couple of my bronies suggested I switch over to FL and I've found that while FL is inferior to Reason in terms of production ability, it's a lot more newbie friendly and feels a lot less intimidating then Reason (That's just my opinion on it though) and plus the vast amount of VSTs is a huge plus (Massive and Nexus FTW!).

I tried out some other DAWs before, but because i grew up with piano rolls, i didn't like any of them until i found fl which had one.

Vinyl Scratch wrote:Huh, so am I the only person who uses just FL for music? Go, FL. Woo-hoo.

I mean that I don't have any other DAWs installed, and I don't consider Adobe Audition (which I use for looping purposes) as a DAW.

Since i don't consider, or at least use OpenMPT as a DAW, then I'm an FL-only guy too. yay. :3

Whoa, really? I've always heard that Fl studio was the best...

FL-only user here. So far it's the only DAW I've tried that I've felt comfortable working on. I've tried Reason before, but I found it rather complex and didn't like the way you sequenced percussion on it, so I dropped it. I tried Live once, as well. I don't think I gave it much of a chance, though. I think imma give it another shot soon-ish.

My problem is that I feel... stuck. Like, I don't know how to make the most of whatever software I'm using. I have no idea how to use all the plugins and other goodies they have, I have no idea what a filter or an envelope is, and though I often look all that stuff up, I'm so overwhelmed by the amount of stuff there is to learn about all those things that I end up giving up.

Not this time, though. Now I'm determined to do my best to learn to use the tools I have.

Ugh, inorite? I started to browse this site not too long ago, and while I'm not that far into it yet, what I've read so far I've found pretty useful and enlightening. Perhaps it could be a good starting point for you too: http://tweakheadz.com/guide.htm

eeyup, I touched FL studio only because deadmau5 uses/used it. I bounced away from it straight to the ableton. and confound y'all, ableton is sooooo easy to use...
Of course that whole "DAW chooses you" is nonsense to me, no matter how hard i try not to think about it. It's like saying "the programming language chooses you" and yes, c++ is way easier than JAVA. (why did i come back to my old nerdcore self?)

Fl only here. I've been wanting to try Ableton and Cubase. Never got into Reason. I've been using FL for 3 years now. To mean its very comfortable and fast. I guess it just takes a little getting use to.
A fews songs in progress at all times!

I'm the exact opposite, started with FL (still use it) and it just made sense to me. I love the interface, and everything about it. Tried Reason for the first time today...my brain...exploded. Makes no bloody sense to me at all. Maybe it's just because I got used to FL first, but it sure feels like it chose me. I just...love it so much.

This thread is a year old, I see now. meh.
