A good Studio-Quality Microphone?

Postby BeaM » 17 Apr 2012 17:56

Hi guys,

I just wanted to ask something. I'm going to getting some money for my b-day and I want some suggestions for a good studio quality mic because I want to try singing in my songs. Any suggestions for a mic in the price range of $100 or so? (You can go more, I just want suggestions)

Thanks guys!

Depends on what you want. The Audio Technica AT2020 is a really nice mic, but it's really bright. So if you have a naturally light voice, then you'll have difficulty singing harder, heavier things. It's also a condenser mic, so if you have an audio interface or a mixer set up, make sure it can supply phantom power.

The Shure SM58 is also a safe bet when it comes to vocal mics. If you do a lot of harsher singing, like screaming and whatnot, this might be the better choice. Your vocals won't be as clear, but they'll sound a bit deeper. And you can use these live, too.

SM58, truly a live microphone, but quite unfitting for studio purpouses, in my experiences.
Then I would rather recommend the at2020, as it is a large-diaphragm microphone.
But be carefull, you need a rather quiet place to record then, else you will hear a lot of annoying stuff on your records: Neighbours, birds, cars driving by, footsteps, sqeaking chairs, etc...
That might be the only problem of it.
