HELP!!! I Don't Know Where To Begin!!! P.S. New Here!

Postby Frost Byte » 29 Mar 2012 17:44

Yeah...the subject title kinda describes itself. Basically I'm using 'Ableton Live 8' and I'm trying to make music like this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSs5O5mB ... lf=mh_lolz

(the youtube thing isn't working...so just copy the link)

...the style is supposed to be more Electro & House with some Dubstep-ish influences such as Skrillex and Nero etc...

Anyone know where I should start?

Also...if anyone wants to collab, or help me do a remix of their songs...PLEASE ASK!!! xD

Well, for starters, get Massive and as many presets as you can - the basic presets are alright, but actual libraries by actual artists and soundlabs will do you some good. Then look up tutorials on how to make any sound you don't have that you want.

And maybe start with a remix or something. Ask The4thImpulse or someone like that, people who frequently post in the music section, for some track stems. Or I could toss you some, but just as a warning, I suck more than they do.

But the most you can do until you're inspired to make something is to get acquainted with your DAW, get some good VSTs and sample libraries and stuff, and just make sure you can navigate everything when you do have something floating around in your head that needs to be put into a track.
Youtube -- Soundcloud -- Tumblr -- Bandcamp (new album out!)

I can't feel my brain.

Cheers! Thanks for the info! You say The4thImpulse? Does he regularly let people remix his stuff or something?

Oh by the way...could you give me a link to where you can get Massive from? I have searched everywhere and I can't find it without having sign-up to the site first... :|

Well, Massive is a VST that you have to purchase, and we're not linking anything illegitimate here, so...

Yeah, you're going to have to buy it or get it from other sources.

1 Sentence, emulation leads to inspiration, Dont feel bad about trying to copy someones synthline or their drum pattern, in doing this, you could find your own that works really well. Look up how to make sounds, learn how to use all of Abletons instruments effectively. When it comes to VSTs learn how to use about 3-4 really well instead of learning loads half arsed-ly
Few more tips, DOnt ever think "today, imma write a song" youll end up frustrated when you cant get anything out. Instead think in parts like "today, im gonna make an amazingly drum pattern/synth hook" etc etc
Also, when you have something, dont listen to it over and over again (AKA loop monging) if you do this, your brain will start thinking of the whole thing as a good loop instead of "what can i do with this"
Learn some basic mastering skills to make things sound better, like leveling, EQ
this may be common knowledge to you, but i didnt know this when i started but, If your master channel goes Red, this means your peaking. THIS IS BAD, AVOID THIS, When working, try and keep the loudest elements hitting at about -6dB, you can always make things louder when mastering. when i started I thought it meant that the output was really loud and i should take care when listening (yes i was that stupid)
Thats probably a lot for a beginner, so sorry if you dont understand much
If you ever need any help, im a pretty dab hand at Ableton so dont hesitate to send me a message on here or we can chat on skype
