Pony Dj's

Postby Freewave » 12 Dec 2011 00:54

Hey I haven't seen any threads on pony dj's on the site yet. I know there's some pony radio stations but not sure if they're mixing records (club style) or just playing records (radio style). While I'm going to try my hand at remixing around here (and maybe music although i'm likely outclassed in the composing field) where I'm hoping to really assist is in dj'ing and trying to put the music out there in the form that most electronic music sounds best in; the mix.

I was just curious how many other Pony dj's are out there as I joined a local bronies forum and there are a few there and I've seen a handful of dj's elsewhere. Kind of a bummer that the guy who goes as the "official dj pon-3" on youtube just mixes regular EDM but not MLP music (what a shame). Hopefully having a few of us will still get people into the music further.

Just curious how people feel about dj's getting involved in the scene to push it forward and help out in their own way. So far I've only got a 2 disc mixtape that was meant as a primer for anyone interested in the scene (but missing a few artists and other great tracks that i'll try to include on its sequel) and with my bronies off-site its been successful in getting them into the music side. My big thing to keep it ethical is while my mix is under my name (or the character's name) its a single track but I give the tracklist for every track so that people know who's being played (so that anyone who wants a track will hunt down the original) and of course to make it free. To me its important (while i may not beatmix every track in and out) to make it a real mix and journey so i'm not making my own comps and so that mix really makes it a "complete" listen. As there's people already radio broadcasting, mass torrenting, etc I'm hoping that dj'ing others tracks is seen as ok. It's really not feasible to ask each and every artist if its ok to play their track (and that's not how dj's in a club operate of course) but if any artist definitely HAD a reservation about their music played by others I'd like to know in advance to steer clear (or to ask if it was important to them).

I just wanted to have a thread on the topic as I haven't seen any discussion on it and wanted to see how people felt about it, any concerns, and find out who else in the community is playing MLP music as a DJ out there. Hopefully this may be a way that the music gets played in a live environment at meet-ups and gatherings too if artists don't go the live route.

http://www.bronyradio.com has actual DJing a few times a week, but right now there's only two DJ's. We are looking for some more DJ's though so you should join the chat room and ask about joining if you're interested.

Hey; just now got home so I can finally post here! (Curse you making threads at midnight! :P)

I refer you all to this post; viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1100&p=11607#p11607

I'm playing a show sometime February, and will be dropping plenty of pony ladden toons.

Currently, because 90% of the people there will more than likely assume that the tracks I'm playing are mine, I am asking permission of every brony I intend to play; which isn't many, because there aren't many bronies out there with a tracklist of dubstep.

I think it's great to have DJ's playing pony tracks, and I may or may not check out the link to bronyradio; we'll see, I'm really busy with trying to pass 10th grade and make music and pony all at once, along with eating and sleeping on a semi-regular basis. It's difficult.

Also not a shameless self plug, and I just noticed you're (DJ-Pon3) from Denver.
Mountain bronies; unite! /)(\
10/15/2014 - I finally return to ponies? Maybe.

Actually it was more like 10/12/2015

My current SoundCloud, pony & non-pony things found here.

I have 4 EP's under this alias!

Somepony talk to me, I are the lonelies. :c

I'm also going to bet mostponies wouldn't really care if you played their mix, especially if the name is in the tracklist. Probably many would enjoy the free publicity. What's upsetting is straight up taking credit for work someone did, like a video or song, just by altering nothing, repackaging it, and slapping your name on it for views.

Also, you have to keep in mind that by using recorded content from the show, you are infringing on copyrights, performances, and compositions by a variety of persons and companies. So in a sense certain music ( that isn't 100% completely original ) is just a lesser form of ripping off others anyways. Not to mention the amount of pirated software used, and the use of unauthorized samples/loops etc.

Not as big of a deal with truly original content made with the show in mind, and also most of the parties involved don't seem to mind, but I'm just sayin'. Most people are using other's work already in some form or another.

Agreed. I think its far worse to post a 40 minute mix w/o a tracklist and just your name. Part of the reason this scene is so vibrant is because Hasbro and the show producers are very lenient on what they allow people to do. They literally don't seem to be pursuing anything. I've seen anything goes on youtube, music sampling wise, and even visual artists selling their own shirts online for $25 (that's really pretty outrageous i think) but so far they've taken it all in stride. If they ever did start cracking down well that would kind of be the end of that for everyone.... Hopefully people won't go to overboard and invite a crackdown as that would suck for everyone. That's part of the reason why i like this scene and the fact that 95% of it is free music as it should be.

I've dj'd for some stuff at my school, i work in the tech department for my school's asb. Never actually thought about throwing some pony music in there though (oh god pony music in front of hundreds of teenagers, who knows how that could end up :P) I use virtual dj, and a couple of other different things. Don't own too much dj equipment sadly :/

My friends and I play a number of live shows a year around the convention circut, Anime, furry, etc and we've all taken a huge shine to a number of the pony remixes that float around. During the last few shows we've done I think every one of us has attempted to mix in some pony in one way or another. The trick I think to having it go over well is to be subtle about it. I mean, if you do a 40 minute pony set for a crowd that isn't there FOR pony in the first place, you're just going to alienate them. I've found that a song or two that just fits into the rest of your set works best when trying to integrate things into a live set.

As a reference,

http://oddy.me/youmacon2011/

I had some pony somewhere in the middle of my set (which is predominantly top40 club / house) and the crowd loved it. (Saturday, Raven) And Jeefy opened his dubstep set that night with Pony. I believe DJ Meph also had a remix he did inspired by ponies in his set as well.

Regardless, we love the work you guys put into the remixes and are happy and proud to play them for the largest crowds we can find. Just thought I'd put my two cents in and say thanks to everyone.

I didn't realize that soundcloud had such space limitations with a free account so likely going to get my last mixtape and their sequels (2 more discs) on youtube when i can get some nice complementary video (decided not to try to spend as much on this as initially planned/drafted) to go with them.

I dj'd as a job when I was 13 for a local car company and performed at street fairs. I still have my full setup, 2 denons, PA, etc. I plan on getting back into it someday.

We got a side conversation in this thread about the importance for dj's on mix in and mix out points as some tracks have been made as basically radio edits and not club versions. if there's any dj's out there that want to get involved in basic re-edits by simple relooping and converting radio edits into club versions that might be a nice niche to fill for those who aren't prepared for FULL remixes. Just throwing that out there in case any dj's had similar thoughts and were looking at ways to assist. :)

I think that anyone who needs a club version might do it himself, and if he can't, he might ask the original artist to make the club version himself. You should inform the original artist for other reasons too.

oh true, i'm just throwing that out there as a concept so in case any artist hadn't thought of it they will in the future. It's a lot easier for the artist to make club versions rather than dj's making our own re-edit club mixes from mp3's vs wavs plus i'd want the artist to be aware and sanction it or be ok with its use.

I'd love to try my hand at DJ'ing (Only ever played around with the setups in Guitar Center, and loved it) but alas, I'm completely broke, and also don't have a ton of time to devote to DJ'in, composing, AND being lazy.

But if anyone ever wanted to use my songs in any sort of mix of club setting, I'd be more than happy if you did, and if you want me to change something up to make it easier for DJ's to use, just hit me up to see if I can do anything.

Also, don't flame me out for asking, but what exactly IS a club mix? What does that entail that a normal version wouldn't?

Good question as a lot of brony artists don't know what the term "dj friendly" or "club mix" mean and its actually pretty simple. A club mix will have a long intro and outro, generally without pads and with minimal synths and melodies present but the drumbeats are the most obvious instument present so the dj can mix the track into another track and they aren't immediately conflicting. It's during these 32 bar intros and outros that the dj does most if not all the mixing. There's other ways to mix in and out such as during breakdowns or during any minimal bridges in the middle of the track if you don't play the track in full but most use these intro and outros extensively.

The key in a club mix will be 5 min + duration quite often, long minimal into and outro (32 bars, often building, and often minimal bridges for quick mixouts or of course breakdowns.

The people who really do this extensively and well are the ones you'll see in many dj mixes. Namely artists like Stevie V, Thorinair, and Silva Hound for example.

^Perfect example of a club mix^

For this track you can mix in at the :30 part or further in at the 1:00 mark during nb breakdown. But its a perfect club intro. Likewise there's many places to mix out of it after the intitial section where vocal samples and complex melodies are NOT present.

As stated most Brony tracks are "radio edits" by nature as its instant gratification, few builds, no minimal sections and that makes them very hard to mix but certainly not impossible. I do have to scold dj's who ONLY try to mix tracks that are dj friendly as that's ignoring so many great ones and the dj's JOB in overcoming limitations. Quick transitions, cold start and stops, and creative transitions are what the dj is supposed to be able to do.
