best free vst plugins?

Postby itroitnyah » 04 Apr 2012 19:40

Alright, so I'm looking for some of the best free virtual synths to use.

I currently am using Synth1, which is alright, although it has its limitations. It's dual oscillator, includes things like amp, filter, LFO, chorus/flanger, tempo delay, equalizer/pan, effects channel (includes a decimate, and a few others) a voice with max of 32 poly, a unison, and an arpeggiator,
and a wheel/midi thingy.

I'm looking to try something else that will get me more of the resulting sounds that I want. Which I want it to come somewhat close to emulating Massive, although I know it probably won't. Which is fine.

I'm thinking about getting Green Oak Crystal as a vst

If you have any other suggestions for free vst plugins that are really good, just list them and I'll take a look at them :)

My favorite free vsti is TAL-Elek7ro, it can produce some very good basslines but doesn't have any fancy wave shaping/tableing like massive, its got 2 lfo's, 2 eq's, 2 osc's and a sub osc.

TAL is great for basses. Haven't tried Elek7ro, but TAL-Bassline is pretty nice.

Other than that for basses though, here are some great free VSTs that offer a lot of capabilities:

- Adonis (Great synth with an arpeggiator and sequencer.)
- Crystal (Everybody says this is the best free synth, but I haven't fully delved into its possibilities.)
- Cubix (Drum machine. Can produce some pretty awesome loops.)
- Saffron (Sound font player with all kinds of filters, effects, and an LFO. Ever want to do dubstep with a wobble choir? It can do it.)
- Metatron (Arpeggiator and sequencer. Can make lots of great arps, trance gates, and other cool effects.)

One thing to note that I've discovered with free VSTs though. They aren't as stable. I often run into issues if I run any more than one instance of any of the above VSTs, which I don't when using paid VSTs like Massive, Nexus, and Kontakt.

I think it would help if the thread Bartekko linked to were a sticky, and if we had an "I'm new, advice?" sticky thread as well. Just my two cents.

We could sure use a few more stickies for these kinds of FAQ threads.

Here is a link to another forum with a huge list of free vst and vsti's
