Creating drum and bass breakbeats. Also basslines.

Postby Expy » 30 Mar 2012 04:57

OK, so I enjoy attempting to create drum and bass. However, one thing I've noticed are that the beats are quite complex. I have a whole lot of DnB samples I could use behind the main beat of a track to make it sound more authentic, but I dislike doing this. I'd prefer to make the beats using individual samples. However, this is proving harder than I expected.

Here's what I've been working on:

I have used two different hats, the occasional clap, and a crash sample. I've fiddled with the velocity, panning and pitch of the hats, and I've got it sounding alright, but I still feel like it's missing something. How do you guys recommend I proceed?

Another thing is the bass in DnB. In the SoundCloud link above I've tacked on a section at the end with my bass accompanying the beats, and again with a piano over the top. What do you guys think of the bass sound and the bassline itself? Also, what do you think of the buildup sound I used before the bass?

Thanks for any help, and sorry for the question dump. ;)

The drums sound pretty nice, and the bass is nice too, but tbh, the bass could be alot better. I'll post what I do for reese bass(or at least, one thing I do)

Alright, here's a little tip to make reese bass(almost always used in DnB) in less than a minute, assuming you have FLS.

1. Open 3xosc
2. Set all 3 osc's to saw wave
3. Set the first osc "Fine" knob to -25 cents.
4. Set the 2nd osc "Fine" knob to +25 cents

Done. And you can mess with the "Crs" knobs to get the sound you want. And of course, you could set it to a mixer track, use fruity flanger and all that other stuff to make it sound how you want.

The drums sound kinda off. You should download some better drum samples, cba to link any but google is your friend.
Try this (I hope you grasp EQing  ):

1. Pick a kick, focusing around 90-120hz, EQ everything down below 75hz, (To leave room for the sub-bass). EQ The mids down a bit, and maybe boost the high frequencies to give it a "click".

2. Pick a snare, focusing around 200hz, boost the 200hz area, EQ the mids down a bit, increase highs a bit. Add reverb or maybe layer it with a white noise clap

3. Add a shitload of hihats and a break, plug them into a stereo enchancer. Don't forget to make some of dem hihats shuffle!

4. not necessary but you can send all of them in a send channel and add heavy compression to give some dynamics

OK! That's quite similar to what my bass is already, except I have the fine knobs tuned to -10 and +15 cents, not -/+ 25. I have the third oscillator muted. I'll try what you said and fiddle with it.

I do grasp EQing, seeing as you're the one that told me how you do it in one of my music posts :D . I'll look around for some better samples and try what you said.

Thanks!
