Leads and Build Layering Help

Postby A.I. Music » 25 Mar 2012 09:29

I have a problem where I make a chord pattern or lead, and then I don't change it much. I just use the same pattern for the whole song, usually. I don't really know much about layering leads and chords and stuff with it sounding good. Could I have some help, MLR? :)

I don't mean this to be a plug but if you listen to my newest song the plucked chords in it are very comlicated, there are actually 3 synths playing diffrent parts of the chord that I bring in and out as the song progresses and the last part they all play together. When I make a chord pattern I usually start with a simple chord, 3 notes maybe, and copy that for 4 bars. I then experiment with changing the chord in diffrent parts of that pharse until I have something that sounds good and progressive. Then I take that loop and double it and change the last one up a bit to keep the that same sense of progression. Once I have something that is 16 bars in length I use that as the main chords and usually copy and paste that through the track.

I find that a lot of my success with chords is complete luck through much experimentation, the same I can program a synth for a few hours on end (I love doing this) I can there and make huge chords through 1 or 2 hours of work.

I hope this helps.

Except for Massive. I swear the longer I end up tinkering in Massive, the worse my sound gets.

I know that feel, bro. But my method for avoiding this is to take a very intricately-made preset and then remove all of the filters, maybe switch a couple of the waveforms, then re-enable the filters or replace them. It's basically just making a new sound, but it adds an element of reverse-engineering that can help with making new sounds from scratch or knowing exactly what to tweak in a good preset.
Youtube -- Soundcloud -- Tumblr -- Bandcamp (new album out!)

I can't feel my brain.

Yeah. Currently, I use Massive for pretty much everything synth wise. I should probably stop doing this, but it's so diverse.
