Hi, I'm new.

Postby Dreamer » 22 Mar 2012 14:52

Hello! I'm Dreamer. I'm a 16 year old newbie brony producer from Sweden.
I'm new to this site and new to making music, and I hope that this community might aid me with some advice and criticism as I post my progress on these boards. I'll leave a link to my soundcloud and I would really, really appreciate any feedbag you might provide me with, be it good or be it bad.

great :) can't wait to hear what you produce. If you use the same software as me (which you probably don't), then you can just ask me for tips at any time

Well, I've released 5 songs on my soundcloud. Maybe I should have made it clearer that I actually was looking for feedback for the songs I've already made.... Curses!

Alrighty then :P criticism it is.

Generosity's Reward:
This one was good. Your instruments seemed to be a bit off beat from each other, I'm not exactly sure if that's one instrument or one, and the drums sounded a bit random, with uprisings in the beats placed in randomly. The cut off section was the right length, but the transition was a bit fast, you could have done better with it. overall, it was a good trance, but could have been better.

Kindness:
This one was good too, a nice trance beat, instruments worked well with it. only problem was the piano was a bit loud on the notes, and the fade didn't quite last long enough. The drums on this one were good, so not a whole lot I can say about those. Overall a good, track, although the voices sounded a bit too loud. And the piano sounded a slight bit out of tune, but not enough to matter.

Dark Symphony:
The instrument you're using sounds out of tune. Its also a bit repetitive. It sounds a bit over "twingy" to be a dark type of instrument, but you did your best and it works, for the most part. The voice at the end doesn't exactly fit in, but once again its a bit loud. The one major problem with this song is that I think you named it wrong. Don't worry though, naming the song is the hardest part.

A Song for Twilight Sparkle:
The deep back thud sounds really out of place, as well as a few of the instruments, but you're really going places with the drums building up the tune. The twanging cord instrument, as it sounds like, has a good idea, but it sounds like it could fit better in the song if you made it start at a lower volume and slowly build up until you have it at full, otherwise this is a good song.

Equestria:
The beat at the beginning sounds really random, like there is no pattern, and the instruments sound a bit out of tune, but when you get into the background whistle rising action, the beat sounds more rythmic. When the whistle ends, the instruments don't really match up or align very well, but its still rythmic. the drums on this one are good.

Overall, you're definitely making progress. Your later songs sound better then your first two or so, although they all sound good. You just need to work on better instrument selection and manipulation, as well as controlling the volume on the voices.

I hope this is what you're looking for :D continue to make music. I can't wait to hear your future pieces

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for! :D It's nice hearing that I'm making progress. To clarify one thing though, the name "Dark Symphony" comes from another brony musician who's also on this site. I made it for him! If you check out his stuff you can see that he's made a song called "Dreamer's Request" as well. :3

Well I liked your Equestria Track and Gerosity's Reward was pretty good too. My biggest recommendations are these:

1. Make your tracks more pony. Have a show sample in the breakdown. more often, or in the begining vs just at the end. Have a theme when you are making music. Have a track TELL a story of an MLP character. Maybe a scene from an episode, maybe a what if possibility, etc. Toastbeard is a great competition for letting the show influence the music so i can't recommend that enough as a way for getting involved for new artists. It will get you into that mode of thinking when creating music, give you good feedback on saturday evening sync-casts, and let you hang out with your peers in a positive feedback mode.

2. Make your tracks more complex. Your melodies are pretty good on the two tracks i highlighted but you need more elements. Drums, hi-hats, synth1, synth 2, pads, bass, samples, etc. Don't be afraid to have more things happening at once just because you'll have to Eq them, its needed.

3. Get better vsts, use envelopes, panning, builds, drops, use effects, and little tricks to spice them up. Really this is an expansion of #2 but instead of adding complexity add variety and technological depth.

4. Avoid the quick track for the complex devloped one. Basically don't be afraid to take your time and put out a great track that takes a week or two vs a quickly made good or fair one. Anything you make you should hear several times and in different environments (mp3 player, home stereo, car stereo) before you consider it done. Its often on those further listens and tweeks that you'll want to develop and improve your tracks.

5. Don't worry, you'll get better, and have ultimately have fun with this.

Hope these help you as you've got off to a decent start but I'm sure you can build upon that and make your music even better. :)

Thanks for the great feedback! These are all definitely things I need to work at. I'll be having some free time very soon, hopefully I'll have a new, better made track out within 2-3 weeks. :3
