<pony><remix><wipprobably>At the Gala (First Song)

Postby I AM DUMB HORSE » 21 Mar 2012 12:25

This is my first song. Had to do a remix from a MIDI file for a school project. I wanted something challenging, thinking it would help me understand my DAW a bit quicker. I decided a complex orchestral track would be cool, and wanted to try a genre I'm less familiar with, so I went for an instrumental hip-hop version of At the Gala. Honestly, I think I did learn more, and am glad I tried for something more challenging, but... AUGHJKDFNBDJFKGNKDFBGJBJK

I really think I should have gone with a genre I prefer. The urban-style I was going for clashed with the characters, and I'm not entirely satisfied with the flow of the song in its entirety. Tagged this as "wipprobably" because, I'm not sure if I want to continue with this track. I'm just not feeling it. I'd still appreciate critique, if any of you would provide some. I'll implement what advice I can, and maybe that'll get me back into this project.

Here's the remix.

This is not the reaction I expected, but it's exactly what I needed to make me want to work on the song again. Thank you very much! :D

I'll probably change some of the rhythmic parts. I had to use Apple Loops in it as part of my assignment, but I mixed and matched them to form some basic rhythms of the song. It's already a remix, so throwing in a bunch of preset loops like that just makes me feel like I'm not utilizing enough of my own creativity.

I too would like to have sex with your track :D

Seriously though I do like the lo-fo whimsicality of that and I'd focus on that and keeping it a little strange and lighthearted. Remind me a little of Beck Odelay and older-era Beastie Boys. now you could add acapella vocals on there if you want (maybe some glitch effects thru dblue). Of course better vsts instruments over the midi's you do have would be better but this does have a bit of charm to it and the variety of twists and turns is commendable.

Thanks! I like Beck and the Beasties, so it's pleasing to hear such a comparison. :D I actually do want to throw in some real vocals in place of that piano track, but I dropped the tempo a bit and don't know how I could get the acapella to sync with the beat. I figured I could cut and paste some samples up for a glitchy sound, but doing that for SIX solos, AND a backing choir? I don't want to overkill it. My experience with samples is fairly deficient, so I'm going to have to mess around with it for a while. I'm looking through the Technique board now to see what others have tried. Also, I'm using Logic Pro on Mac. It uses AU instead of VSTs, so I may need to look into a VST wrapper.
