<remix> Another Shadow Of A Flower remix. Please critique.

Postby A.I. Music » 13 Mar 2012 15:17

Hello, MLR. This is my first post here! I would really appreciate it if the community here would critique my remix of StormWolf's awesome track: "Shadow Of A Flower". Thank you very much.

It's not too bad. There's parts of it that don't seem to mesh up with the vocal part, melodically. It also sounds a little flat, like things could use some EQing (specifically the drums), might just be how I'm hearing it, though. I haven't listened to the original enough to give a better "critique" of it as a remix, but it sounds pretty good. The intro has a nice hook, and the ending is smooth. And welcome to MLR! If you ever have any questions or want help with the DAW you're using or just questions in general, be sure to check out the Technique subforum, there's a lot of helpful resources there. Keep it up! :)

I would agree with Kozar things sound a little flat, try some kind of exciter or harmonic enhancer to give it a bit more warmth. It doesn't sound like you used much eqing in the song, Always EQ every little sound from the lead to a simple hi hat, get rid of unnecessary frequencies (youd would be surprised at how much you can get rid of) doing that will make your track immediantly sound much better. The vocals are well mixed they sit in just the right spot, good job! As a whole I like the track, but it could use some more work before its at its best.

Thank you all very much for your critique, and it makes me happy that you like it. I will defiinitel EQ more in the future. And I'm trying to invest in more music equipment, but I'm only 15, and don't have a lot of money. But thank you all very much.

most of us don't have money but as you've noticed from all the "pirate" toastbeard themes there's "ways" around that :D

yeah this is a bit flat so need to repeat that comment endlessly but otherwise sounds like it was well conceived remix giving it a different sound that the original. not quite a progressive house do to the unusual beat but as close as anything. when you make a mix check on your highs and your lows and make sure you have both and they're clear. the bass should be clear and so the drum on the low end. vocals, hi hats, and synths will be mids and highs. make sure that they're not a clutter of sound and you can hear each clearly and they don't over-ride each other. you can pan some instruments to the left and right to create a difference in that sound between the instruments and eq any offending freq out of the some of tracks. one trick is to make your mix and play it out in a few different sound systems (home stereo, ipod, car stero) and notice if they sound differently in each. its worth your while to test out the mastering and get rid of anything you don't like BEFORE you upload it on soundcloud and ytube as you can't turn back time (Twilight found this out the hard way) and it sucks to put out a track that just needed a little more time and work.

ps welcome to the site.
