METALHEADS!! I BESEECH THY AID!!

Postby Arkane » 24 Feb 2012 00:14

So.. I'm doing a remix of Rainbow Factory.

http://eqbeats.org/track/336

I need help on how can I improve this. I plan to change the vocals to growling. Good idea or not?

I like the vocals the way they are, there needs to be a lot of work done on the overall mix.

The drum track has way too much reverb on it especially the kick, you really need to bring out the kick and snare a lot they should sit close to the front of the mix. The cymbals could be put further back and give them less reverb and shorter decays. If you can sidechain the cymbals and main synth to the kick on the quater note (very slighty) could help.

You should also EQ EVERY track to give more room for all the sounds. Cut out all the frequencies everything you can espicially the cymbals as the will muddy up the lower end and quickly fill the high end.

^ What he said.

EQ out the lows of all the cymbals, and while you're at it, EQ out all the highs of the guitars. It'll sound terrible when solo'd, but you won't notice the difference at all with everything else playing.

And speaking of cymbals, find better cymbal samples. Get something that has a lot more attack and a quicker decay so you can hear the cymbal hits instead of a constant hiss.

Orchestra needs to be softer. Drums should always be easily audible in metal, and the guitar needs to be more rhythmic and with a little bit more bass. Right now, I'm just hearing the orchestra with white noise in the background. I literally cannot hear anything the guitars are doing. So what you should be doing is in the guitar amp, up the mids and tone down the treble a little more. Then, add some palm muted things here and there so it isn't just a whining drone through the whole thing. Lack of sound is as powerful as sound, and in a lot of cases, more powerful.

The strings have too much presence in this one, so like all the comments above say, adjust the sound levels and get the EQ better.

The blast beats are a good idea, but the voice doesn't really fit into Symphonic Metal, as you are better off with going off with Death Metal, akin to Morbid Angel. However, if you truly want to accommodate, I'd move towards listening to Cynic's "Focus" album, as they use the vocoder. Main drawback here is that you will be changing the style quite a bit, but you will probably be more accustomed to it than Symphonic Metal. Not saying that you shouldn't call it that, but composition of Rainbow factory is actually ideal for a death metal song than symphonic metal. Actually, the incorporation also reminds me of some early Black Metal songs of Emperor's. But my own personal take; go for Cynic, and perhaps have both original and growling vocals.

However, as for reverbs, it is actually a good thing for a lot of symphonic acts, and for drums, it is very normal. However, you will need to work on volume levels, especially the strings, which feels out of place with the drums. Rather than staccatos or whatever they are called, they need to be sustained notes going over bars. They just feel out of place with blast beats for me.

Can't say I'm a fan of guitar vsts, though. But that is just the luddite in me. However, you are probably going to need several tracks for each part. Try have 2 or 4 guitars parts for each part of the song so that there is more variation in the overall sound. One guitar can play the low power chords while the other can play some high open chords.
