<original><pony> Illquestria (my very first pony track)

Postby TheEternalInsomniac » 27 Feb 2012 14:19

I've been fooling around with FLS since this summer (just like ponies). Recently I was listening to some Wolfgang Gartner and I was pretty inspired by his Illmerica composition. Guess what? Yeah, I've decided to make pony track called like "Illmerica" with more obvious title "Illquestria". Actually, it's my very first attempt to create smth with length over 1 minute, so I guess it's not that good as it could be.
Anyway, links below, I'd like to see some constructive criticism™.
...
A lil' note about the vocals: there is a lack of vocals. Actually, all the voice you can hear there is just some random phrases from MLP.

PS: Yup I realised I pretty screwed up middle frequencies of the lead, but who cares

This is a vintage signature. No, really!

Actually, for a first attempt, this is really, really good. I love the Wolfgang Gartner reference, so points for that, but beyond that it does a damn good job of staying interesting in a genre that often slips too easily into mindless repetition (even Illmerica almost does that).

Though if I could make a bit of criticism: It sounds unmastered. And that's fine if you're not 100% done with it, but as a rule I try to slap on a few effects in my master track to fill it out, you know, bring up the volume and tame some of the more unruly tracks in the mix. And you might want to try a bit more stereo next time, keep the sounds from burying each other so much.

I can't feel my brain.

I really like this. The absence of vocals seems fine to me, the samples do it just fine.

Thank you for positive feedback! Yes, I realise that the weakest point of mine is mastering and sound synthesis. It is really easy to make out an idea, but very hard to actualize it irl — I created the melody within 10 minutes (including the solo) and spent more than 3 hours trying to make it sound more appropriately.
Next time I'll be making some stuff I'll sure spend more time mastering the sound and equalizing the frequencies *squee*

PS: I know it's weird when you judge your own creations, but the only thing I liked in this one is an oldschool ymVST arpeggio. Maybe I should try to make 8-bit tracks? Dunno what style to choose now.

Yeah almost vaguely Electroclash-y. Liked it even if the mastering could be better. A great start.
