What's so good about NI Massive?

Postby randomblockfilms » 18 Feb 2012 18:56

Ok I know this might be silly question to ask but I can't seem to answer it myself.

So I hear a lot of about NI Massive and how its really good and stuff but i just don't really know why. Is it the interface? the price? what is it?!?!

like what makes is so much better than say Ableton's Operator? or so much better than some other synth.

Because arn't all saw waves and square waves and sine waves the same? and filters. don't they all do the same thing? And arn't modulation algorithms the same? (or are they) hmm... idk

I probably am missing something big here since nobody seems to question the same thing. lol

TL;DR What's so good about NI Massive?

I haven't really used many VST's, but massive is like, great. It's got a nice interface, the sounds that come out of it are very good quality, and there is a ton of great things on it.

But then again, I haven't used that many, so I can't be sure.

I don't claim to know any technical detail as to why it may SOUND better, but as far as the generators I've used go, Massive is by far the easiest to navigate, and that translates into making synths faster, and making music faster. And though I'm sure other generators can produce a lot of the sounds you can in Massive, the sheer variety, even among presets (some of which are really good, mind you), of sounds it has the capability to produce has made it one of the only generators I actually use. I have a song where there's a Massive plugin generating one guitar, one bass guitar, one wobble bass, and one piano. And based solely on the way they sound, it works damn well.

TL;DR: It's easy to use and versatile.

i used z3ta+2 and i used to ask the same question.
The answer is: Massive is way more expansive than any other softsynth I've seen.

It has a lot of options that not many people see at first. It's got a pretty easy learning curve and once you master it, you won't really believe you used operator before.

Some might wonder why it's only got 3 oscillators and four envelopes, but really, who uses more.
and if you do, you can always put it into an instrument rack.

my opinion: Z3TA+2 and NI Massive are the most important things in a virtual studio.

oooo. hmmm. interesting. because I was debating weather or not i should buy it. but it seems that I'll only see whats so good about it when I dive into it. I guess. Lol. but until then, Operator and Analog are my going to have to be my best buddies.

thanks everyone for answerin' mah questionz. 'preshiate it. :D

I agree with Bartekko. It's got by far one of the shallowest learning curves of any synth I've ever tried, and you can get a HUGE variety of sounds out of it, especially if you like dynamic basses. Some leads, too. It's got a very visual interface so it's really easy to see what affects what and how.

It's just one of the easiest synths to use.

I use Gladiator instead of Massive, but I can see where people are coming from with it. They find it comfortable and the sounds come out wonderful, just like me.

...Except that I need a larger vertical screen resolution to see all knobs, but still.

in my opinion synths like Zebra2 and Sylenth1 do a way better job at making fat lead synths. Massive is amazing for making crazy basses and wobbles though!

Massive has a lot of waveforms to create sounds from, instead of the generic Saw, Square, and Pulse waves. Together with Phase modulation (which is pretty much a separate oscillator as well), you have a total of 4 oscillators you can modify, and each one of those oscillators has a different sound when various filters and effects are applied.

I think the big mass appeal for Massive lies with the above features, in addition to being very easy to pick up. You can pretty much create anything you would ever need. There's even tutorials of guys creating bass drum kicks in it.

Personally I love the way you can easily modulate anything with lfo's or envelope's and the amout of waveforms and their wavetableing is a huge plus. Its easy to make wub wubs at the start but if you dive deeper you can make some complex leads and pads.

I patched a ton of the loaded presets from a torrent and its amazing the amount of variety of synths you can use in it. As stated the people who jumped all over it are mostly dubstep producers for the sounds you can get but its certainly not limited to it. It not difficult to use which is a plus.

You can make really neat and fucked up sounds in there. I also like how you can assign every modifier to pretty much aaaaanything, and the routing tab is useful too, if you're anal about signal flow.
