East west/ Quantom leap wisdomses

Postby Mac » 21 Feb 2012 22:31

Hi all, been lurking for a while a decided to finally register and whatnot.

Just looking for some tips on using the PLAY libraries from east west for those of you who've used them, I at least know Dissonance does thanks to youtube. Recently purchased EWQLSO silver and am using it for a school project. I think I've managed to get a decent grasp on my own but I'm just looking to get a bit more efficient with it, so any help is greatly appreciated.

READ THE MANUAL!!!

A lot of the instruments have specific effects and such (moving between dynamics, amount of vibrato etc) that are explained in the manual, but aren't visible on the interface.
I didn't read the manual till much later after getting it and realised a lot of things that took me ages to do, could be done with a simple change of a CC command...buh!

But yeah, read it! Very useful!

Oh and depending on your computer's specs, I suggest opening new instances of PLAY for each instrument. There are many samples and without an SSD (solid state drive), they can stall easily if too many are required at one time. But you have EWQLSO Silver, so that shouldn't be much of a problem, that's more with the really big stuff like the Hollywood Series...

Have fun writing!

Buh, fine I'll read the manual.

Not sure how many instances my system can handle, I've been grouping section per instance, eg. Instance A- strings, instance B- brass etc. It's been ok so far but I dunno how it would hold up after a certain amount.

Thanks for the reply.

I think EWQLSO Silver should be fine with instruments grouped like that, so all good! Have fun!

Right, so I read through the manual and did experiments with all the stuff I figured out over the last few days, but I'm still having trouble using the performance scripts to get smooth legato passages. Do you have any tricks for using those that you might be willing to share? Of course it's fine if you don't/don't want to reveal editing secrets, sorry for being somewhat of a bother.

Well now, I use the Hollywood sets for "Real Legato Passages" so script-based Legato is not what I use...
But, what I did back in the day was play about with each one! With some instruments, there are 4 or 5 different legato sets, such as Vibrato Legato, or Expressive Legato, etc. (although, you have Silver, so I dunno if you get all of them!)
If you are using them, they tend to get the job mostly done without legato scripts, especially one titled "Q-Leg" if you have that one...
Once you've chosen one, just roll with it and if you don't like a specific part, tweak! Tweak! Tweak!
That's basically what I did: changed a setting, is it better? No? Change it back, change another setting, is it better? Keep that setting, continue until happy...

Important CC commands:

CC5 = amount of Legato if Legato Script is active.
CC1 = modwheel, check what this does with each instrument!
CC11 = tends to house dynamics...obviously legato is affected by bow pressure, amount of breath, so bear that in mind!
CC7 = NOT VOLUME! This is volume for other vsts, but not EWQL! This tends to be a "volume compared to other instruments" so, soloists have this high, etc...

That's all I can think of off the top of my head!

Alright, that's pretty much what I've been doing, so good to know I'm not going the completely wrong direction.

Thanks for taking the time to help.
