UPDATES 2/3/2012 AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE
The Fanfic: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/05/s ... stria.html

The first piece is mainly based off part of the series' music, and is supposed to be about Colonel O'Neill and the three ponies who interact with him the most. Can you guess who (If it isn't obivous)?

This piece is supposed to be the theme/motif of a specific pony. Pretty much started with a minute-long melody, which somehow became 7 minutes long (I was too much inspired by the canon technique and BT's "See You On The Other Side"). I do believe I shall have to shorten it.

I would love to hear any thoughts on how to make them better. :)

if you want help on orchestral pieces reach out to Dr.Dissonance as he would be the most helpful critic. Maybe just slightly better midi's for the guitar portion or layer it when it appears by itself. although the rest sound rather good. The good dr may be able to help more with structure too. I like it overall though.

You're too kind. I'm sure you can create music that's better than mine. Just keep on going! :)

I'm going to ask the good Doctor for his advice as well.

Okay my ideas whilst I have time to give them!
The first piece is actually really nice! It does give me a sense of space...or whatever (I haven't read the fanfic or watched Stargate :P)
Main things to think of with the first one:
The opening pizz is obviously electronic, search for a vst with a decent amount of Round Robins in, so it doesn't sound so static.
(Note: Round Robins are basically playing and combining multiple samples, so the same note sounds varied and more real)
Key Changes - they always make a piece sound like it's progressing more. They're also good for signifying section, so think about them. (You can keep that constant tone in a new key quite easily with some effective chord writing!)
Call and Response - That main melody is perfect for some call and response. You DO do this to great effect later on, but think about it more, because you've got a good thing going there. How can you get call and response and a good counterpoint going at the same time? An effective counterpoint with a call and response element is amazing to pull off!

With the second piece; well, it was nice! A bit repetitive for me and when you wrote 'canon' in your description, I was hoping for some lovely technique there! But ah well, it's still nice!
Main things to consider:
Canons still have chord progressions, so think about that, as the current thing revolves around that opening twiddle.
I can't remember the name of the effect, but using a theme that uses notes that fit in more than one chord and moving between them is effective and common in space things. For example:
E G C A C G C F works very nicely in BOTH C Major and F Major. Keep playing that and move between the two with a chord accompaniment and you'll get a nice effect. Consider doing something like that here! I think it'd be great!

Also, when I wasn't on Holiday, I was playing Anno 2070, which is fantastic and has an amazing soundtrack. Funnily enough, this reminded me of it!

I hope some of my ramblings help!!!

Oh man, I've got to brush up on my musical homework. Thanks Doc, you're awesome! :D

I've still got some questions so as to clarify my doubts (I haven't learnt music theory or mechanics in a professional way, so you would have to put up with my rather slow head :( ):

-The first one is basically a remake/revision of a piece I loved, so the biggest flaw was perhaps I was paying too much attention on how to imitate rather than modify... Is an example of a counterpoint the melody of the flute/woodwinds/strings in my second track?
- Would an example of a chord progression for the second piece be G#-B-C# to E-G#-B to F#-A#-C#?

As I am going to be rather busy for these next two months, and for some reason my music program is acting up on my laptop, it should be a while before any final results would appear. But quality over speed is the key, as today's episode stresses, no? :?:

Counterpoint is basically a secondary melody that compliments the primary one...so yes, that does count as counterpoint!

So, C#7 to EMaj to F#Maj? Yeah, that's a good progression! Maybe add one or two more chords to it, make it more interesting!

And yes...I have yet to see the latest episode, so I'll assume you're right...

Updates! Is this legal on the forums to reply to a topic at a late time? I'm terribly sorry if so! :?:

MUCH happier with this version (The chord might change though)! Once again, Dissonance saves the day! :)

This was a complete surprise for me. Enya, my favourite New-Age artist, created back in the 80's an instrumental piece called "Epona" (Who is an influential character in the fanfic). I felt I had to do something with this amazing coincidence. So I wrote some lyrics and sang/murmured them to see how it fits.

I wrote the lyrics from a quasi-religious perspective, as though Epona were my goddess. I can give my analysis if wanted.

Lyrics:
The Dark Times were fraught
With what Discord wrought
In the magical land of Equestria
Trees rained down corns
And ponds stirred up storms
Ponies turned on each other in every way known

Equōrum Domina, our kindly Epona
Had grieved for her mares and her geldings
To break his foul spell, two maidens pledged well
To acquire the wisdoms of true hearts and feelings

Elder Celestia of sun's lasting shine
And younger Luna of eternal night
With powers bestowed by Epona's might so divine
They set out to restore both wrong and right

Trickster was bound, made to hear the decree
To break him thrice for his cruel misdeed
The devil with hands, refused their demands
And ensnared the two with his pure malice and greed

The trees shook, the skies cracked
From Discord's taunts' impact
Yet nothing could bring down the sisters with fear
With Harmony at their side, Discord met his demise
Marriage to marble and rock so austere

The dark times were gone, Draconequi moved one
In the magical land of Equestria
Harmony-laden, were Lady's fair maidens
Who nurtured and cared for the land we hold dear

I freaking hate my voice...
