<Pony><Aggrotech><Remaster> Resist Update

Postby Injustrial » 16 Dec 2013 16:47

So I've been working on redoing a few of my older songs for an upcoming EP.

Here's the original:

That's my first time working with strings and it didn't really work out well for me. A lot of issues, the intro is completely out of place and everything feels like wool.

This is my second try. Though I'm not completely done yet, I think I may be on the right path. Would love to hear if you've got something (not super-complicated or advanced) that I could learn from.

The intro feels like it has too much reverb on everything, and it's really muddying up your mix. Honestly mixing is the #1 thing you should work on here, it sounds kinda like you threw everything through a compressor on the master and called it a day. Some subtractive EQ on your vocals would let the synth shine through a bit more, but be careful you don't change the vocal quality too much. Also side-chaining your synths to the bass drum would let you turn down the drums a bit, while letting them keep their punch. If you want any help with any of that add me on skype and I'll see what I can do, although I'm not too familiar with FL. Nice track though, it has great potential.

I'll give that a go when I can. Sounds like something I could do. Would you suggest adding a sidechain compressor on the leads? I've already got one on the bass, but the threshold might be a bit too high.
Thanks for offering your help, but really have to learn to do these things myself.
And thanks a lot for taking the time to look at it! :)

I think I have done pretty much all I can with it now. The kick feels fuller, the leads are clearer and a few minor tweaks have been implemented

And I just realized there's some insane noise in the chorus there. I'll have to re-record that whole thing...

Sorry for necroing. I decided I really didn't like how the first attempt sounded, so I went in again and did some tweaks and changes. If anyone wants to share their opinions, I'll be grateful

Wow, at first I wasn't sure about this, but then I got really interested in this.

I have to say, I really liked the ending, your voice sounds very cool, and I like the way you said "arise," And the echo tops it off!
The beginning was pretty good, too, I liked the melody. I'm not a big fan of the screaming voice, just not my cup of tea, but when you say "Resist, refuse, rebel, arise," it actually sounds pretty cool. The kick in the beginning was a little too overpowering, imo, maybe a lowpass or something, but It's not that crucial.
I really didn't hear any major issues with this, everything sounded well done. Nice job!

Well, that's encouraging! Thanks, man. I'll see about the kick in the intro. I'm not able to check anything against my studio monitors now, on account of the house being asleep, so I'll have a proper listen come Friday.

This is great dude. I think those kicks at the beginning should be impacts rather than kicks. Boost the lows and cut the highs; then automate those bands to how they are now during the little kick build.

Otherwise this is pretty solid mate!

That's a pretty great idea! I'll see about it when I get the time.

I'm in the process of balancing the vocals a bit better, especially in the first verse. They're a bit loud atm, and there's some clicks somewhere. Updates to follow :)
