...so, long story short (a.k.a. tl;dr):
- 2 years ago (2012-1) zorg gets idea for pony version of "This is Halloween" from "The Nightmare Before Christmas", for fun.
- wants to make the instrumental himself, and asks people to help out with providing vocals.
- zorg gets vocal stems from about 20 people out of the 30 he asked/the track needed, with some last-minute help.
- because of near deadlines zorg doesn't make a re-whatever of the instrumental, thinks he at least made the vocals fit good.
- day after release, zorg hears his work, vocals horribly mis-aligned.
- commits haiku.
- 2 years later (2012+1) zorg digs up the project and tries to make it the proper remake he wanted from the start, for fun.
With the story over, the moral is: Don't release stuff you made under influence of something... anything, until you checked it out at least once while having a completely clear mind
...in any case,
Welcome to the second try for "This is Ponyville", a collaborative track, by yours truly.
Deadline: October 31st, (ETERNAL Halloween)
How this is going to work:
I'll give out a few files referred to as sources from here on:
source.mid - the helper file having the vocal lines, the bass notes and the key/scales notated for each part as legato (read: long-ass) chords.
vocals.mp3 - will be an up-to-date vocal render as it nears completion (with soft vocal-guide sine wave)
Instrumental Contributions:
There are two possible ways this can be done:
Contributing notated instrumentation:
1. You'll select parts where you think you could add something to it, single-instrument things are encouraged :3 (Exception: drumlines)
2. You'll do your magic, and send me the stems as wav files (16/24/32bit, 48Khz sampling rate and up, mono or stereo)
3. I'll add them in, mixing it into the whole.
Contributing live instrumentation:
1. think of a part you could imagine having some irl instrument you have
2. Add me on skype, let's discuss stuff so your potential recording won't be potentially rejected because it can't be used
3. You'll do your magic, and send me the stems as wav files (same restriction as above)
4. I'll add them in, mixing it into the whole.
Note: If there won't be enough contributions, i will start filling out the empty parts with content, though those parts could still be recorded with irl instruments if live players are willing (source midi will reflect such changes only)
Vocal Contributions:
Since last time, there wasn't enough to fill in every gap, and some were sub-par quality sadly, so this time, vocals are still accepted, but that has a different route:
1. If anyone is interested, pm me, or add me on skype and say so; linking a sample or telling me your range, and if you have one, a part preference as well would be nice.
2. After agreeing on what we discuss, record and send stems.
3. ???????
4. MAGIC! (and friendship)
Note: I'm also looking for a way to get a few of the original vocal contributors to re-do a few select things, so if anyone of them still lurk these forums, and happen to check this thread, get back to me on skype pls :3 (else the bad old line stays in, and that's not good.)
Rules:
1. Keep to the given tempo of 172 BPM. (some parts, mostly regarding to solos, can have swing)
2. Don't deviate from the scales the chords define (if unsure what that means/how that works, stick to the chords)
Project Reference:
A listing of each part of the track, with time marks and a list of who's contributing what:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... 6QVE#gid=0
A listing of each vocalist, and the parts which they contributed:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... PR2c#gid=1
Note: Both are edited by me, so they might be a bit behind depending whether people actually tell me if they'll contribute or not
Q&A:
Q: Do you always do projects that have such large expectations?
A: No, but if there's an idea, there will be people who do :3 (That, and failing the megacollab idea after Senator Myth passed it on did not bode well with me, so i needed to do something a tad easier.)
Q: Do we need to sound like the characters? How do some of them even sound like?
A: No, but being able to, where applicable, is a bonus :3
Q: Genre restrictions regarding instrumental stems?
A: Overall mood should be darkish, but other than that, what you imagine would fit best.
Q: How would you like your vocals?
A: Like my steak, i don't have a preference, but raw means i can touch it up easier (if it needs to be).
Q: How come the current vocals sound so terrible still?
A: It's called didn't have time to de-ess and melodyne the ones that need it, don't worry, everything will be fine :3
Q: Do we need to use the given melodies or can we make up our own?
A: In the midi, the two melodies are the vocal lines, for instrumental submissions, you should concentrate on the chords only, meaning any fitting melody can be made.
Q: Can we only do one part / one instrument?
A: Nope, you can submit more on both fronts, though make them separated (both parts and instruments, if a part's beginning/end bleeds into the prev./next part, that's not a problem, though have it fit to those given chords)
