I'm going to set up a contact group and just send every track to everyone on the list. That's how pre-reader works. Should work out better.

Seth, I've seen a lot of people that look at the music posts on EqD but have no idea that most of the musicians do their work on MLR (here) or that there is a weekly competition (Toastbeard) where a lot of the music comes from.

Could you do a music post mentioning both of those with links?

So, just heard about the Glaze incident (and the subsequent removal of my piece as a result)...
I think the pre-listeners need some educating if they're letting non-pony stuff in!

We were not alerted of this matter, not all of the stuff goes to us, only the questionable ones.

Oh apologies then! I'm just a little ticked that I was caught in the afterburn...

Apparently, Glaze's newest thing was put up on EqD...it isn't Pony Related at all...Glaze himself asked for it to be taken down, so the whole post was removed...my piece was in that post too...:P

Quite inconvenient! Especially considering the measures added to make sure non-pony stuff doesn't get through!

How did it get submitted in the first place? If Glaze asked for it to be taken down, it must have been submitted by someone else who didn't realize it wasn't pony related.

Yep, not everything goes to us. I got 4 songs in my inbox in 4 days time. Which, obviously, isn't the whole deal.

Maybe things should only be submitted by the person who made them, to be in line with fanfiction? If prelistener feedback is given it has to be to the right person and because they wanted it.

I don't think any of the feedback I give actually gets sent to the submitters though... I'm assuming this, I don't really know for sure.

After 17 pages, there's not a lot left to add. But imho any trusted name in Pony music who sends a link and requests posting is good... None of them would send something non-pony, especially after Glaze asked for his track to be taken down. By request of the original author only would be a very good rule.
As for other newer or lesser known Pony musicians, some stricter checks should of course be put into play. A pony title or artwork doesn't automatically qualify a song as 'pony-enough', but the true nature of the inspiration will be very difficult to determine. For this, I suggest measuring the quality of the song against it's potentially 'not pony enough' initial appearance. A good song that wouldn't need ponies attached to be a good song was probably inspired by them. A lesser song shouldn't make the cut. I'm all for letting the newer musicians have their say and be heard, but that's what places like My Little Remix and Equestrian Beats are for... A place where everypony can be heard. And since EQD doesn't specialize in just music, but news, fiction, and art as well, getting a song on there should be something to work hard for.
As far a samples go, tho... Here's an example: I do dubstep, and I do slap pony samples in there, but a quick listen will tell you that they are there for a reason. My songs are built around the samples, not the samples around the songs. I believe it should be fairly easy to tell the difference with a single listen. Were I to remove the pony samples, the song would be empty, and no substitutes would make it work again. That's the difference.
In short, not everypony can have their song featured on EQD... it should remain something to strive for.
Pride can be wounded. Swagger is INVINCIBLE..

On the other hand, there's plenty of awesome stuff that gets shunned for unknown reasons. I myself have submitted plenty of songs that I deemed worthy of recognition to EQD, and have often gotten a response saying that they were going to "the queue", but never actually made it to the site. I'm speaking about songs that I submitted months ago and haven't been posted.

I feel bad complaining about this, especially since EQD (well, Seth) has been very supportive of my music since the very beginning, but it still irks me to see other people who make stuff just as awesome, or most of the time better than mine, not getting as much recognition.

The problem with that is you could have a small clique of people who will largely just submit either their own work or the stuff their friends make due to the potential conflict of interest. Equestria Daily gets over 14,000 unique visitors a day, which is a huge amount of exposure for aspiring artists; they shouldn't be denied that opportunity because they don't get to sit at the popular table at lunch.

I don't think anyone in the known group of musicians is abusing the system. Everything that appears to get fast-tracked (same day posting from a known name) that I have seen was deserved. I think it's solely Seth's lack of time that other awesome stuff doesn't get posted. I think Seth needs to seriously consider going full time from ad revenue and the new EqD shirts (webcomics of similar viewcounts selling shirts manage to support one person).

It is a problem though. I follow a few people who are quite consistent in quality, and they submit everything to EqD, but 1 in 4 are put up and those have 5000-6000 views while the equally good ones that do not have 300 or less.

And they should get around to putting up High Spirits.

--

AutomaticJack, I disagree that pure instrumentals (no samples) from unknowns cannot be pony related. I like Seth's way of dealing with it by putting them in a pure-instrumental post 5 at a time (instead of regular 3) that people can avoid if they feel otherwise, like Story Update posts.

--

If this thread is still OK for policy debate, I think remixes are given too much attention on EqD. A wave of remixes after a new show song is OK, and if it does something outstanding of course, but we're still seeing S1 remixes of middling quality (i.e. 20+ better remixes of that song already exist) show up in the 3-song posts. If these are displacing originals I think that is bad.

I didn't mean to imply they were, sorry; I meant that in theory it could be a problem due to a potential conflict of interest. I edited my previous post to better reflect this =).

Ummm... Solarsail. I don't care how many remixes a song has. If it's good, it's good. Whether it's a remix of a new or an old song.
