Good episode, didn't think the song was particularly up to par with previous songs, but still good.

Plagued by the same issues that occurred in the other episodes: poor pacing, weird soliloquy/monologue style, and just tiny little awkward moments where things didn't quite seem to fit together, like toward the end when Rarity mentioned "the other side of the room" when they were clearly outside.

Bringing in background ponies isn't enough to save it, nor is putting ponies like Photo Finish and Prince Blueblood (yeah he was there too) in the background. If those two ponies had been INTERACTED WITH maybe it would've made me tingle in ecstasy, but on balance it was another weak episode in a string of them. So much is happening in this episodes, yet also so little... meh.

SOME THINGS THAT MIGHT HAVE SAVED THIS EPISODE

1) Actually bringing back some of those characters instead of using cameo appearances, like I said
2) Lengthening the song
3) Fixing the various weird pacing issues and boring monologuing
4) MOAR FANCYPANTS AND HIS OBVIOUS ESCORT. I liked Fancypants, and his personality as "important guy who is somehow not a douchebag" could have been magnified by writing in more situations than just the final one in which he demonstrated that he was a pretty cool guy.

Also his whore was one of the few things in the episode that made me smile. SHE SHOULD HAVE HAD MORE THAN JUST ONE OR MAYBE TWO SCENES, she's awesome.

I felt like the episode has good pacing, and the dialogue/monologue were perfect for where she was at (that being Canterlot). The whole thing was a huge play on My Fair Lady.

As a group, we did a good job of taking in the real Moon goddess. The outcry in comments over Mare-Do-Well's identity was a bit ridiculous though (among other complaints). As cool as Derpy or Trixie jumping out of the costume would have been, that isn't really how the show has ever worked. It's about the Mane six, not our fan characters.

Lengthening the song

Lengthening a pop-ish song to take up more room in the episode and leave less room for actual plot doesn't make any sense.

There was plenty of him, he was the most prominent secondary character in the episode! But I agree about the escort.

The massive amount of fan content created in this community is excellent, but it also blinds us a bit to the actual workings of the show.

I don't know, it just seems that I have to judge these episodes by a completely different standard than the S1 ones. It's not a matter of fanon conflicting with canon, it would have been /good writing/ to use established characters in place of the nameless ponies, if at all possible (which I feel it was).

Maybe I was being a bit too harsh on the writing style. But I honestly do not like this weird tendency toward monologuing that seems to be developing. It's a really simple writing adage: dialogue is always more interesting. In fact, my problems with the episode could have basically been fixed if Rarity had one of her friends along with her (I dunno maybe Fluttershy or Applejack, or even a consistent companion in Canterlot) to play off her and prevent her character development moments from being SOLILOQUIES. It would also have helped with pacing, too.

It just honestly, truly bothers me. It's not a matter of Waa! This is inconsistent with what I think MLP should be like! (even though it is). It's a matter of "this is a really poor artistic decision that the writers seem to be repeating."

I should just go back and rewatch it, maybe, with a different mindset.

I tend to agree, but I can't really put my finger on it. Many of the new episodes just don't "feel" right to me.

It's not really so much that it's 'bad,' it's just 'generic.' Other than the massive fandom surrounding it, what makes MLP special any more?

Oh my god all of this was just FANTASTIC. I cringed a little when Spike started demanding gifts from random ponies but after that it was PRO PRO PRO PRO PRO PRO PRO all the way.

Plus a bit of everypony this time. Pinkie Pie has been disappointing lately but her cake assualt brought her up a little.

And hey, all those new background ponies. Some of them are even named.

So I may not post so often around here and recently I may not have been that active within the community, so I'll admit something to you guys.

Recently, I've felt like my appreciation of the show had been lacking somewhat. This wasn't because the show was dropping in standard, or that I was losing interest, it was because I was afraid of what others would think about me liking it.

I know, I know "Be yourself, don't care what other people think" spare me the lecture, the thing is I don't know anybody else IRL who likes the show. Although that doesn't bother me too much, I do have friends who dislike the show a lot. It's not that big of a deal and I keep quiet on it, but I know that no-one within my close circle likes the show.

Without sounding too sappy or revealing my life story, I'm beginning to enjoy being around people again. I don't want to fuck it up.

I'd been having doubts as to whether I should watch the show anymore or not. Was it really worth the effort of having to log out of YouTube to hide recommended videos, hiding my music from people who I care about and almost feeling ashamed towards liking the show?
I know this is pretty weak minded of me, but I hate having to keep secrets from people. Even if it's so trivial as to liking a show about ponies, I don't want to be alone again.

The newest episode changed all that. This is a good god damn show and I enjoy watching it! I felt like it had some pretty deep and interesting themes about growing up and being a good person. Also, I'm a sap for melancholy and this ep was teeming to the brim with it.

I'm still keeping my passion for the show under wraps, but now I'm okay with it. I just hope one day I can meet somebody who has the same ideals as me. Until then, I'm happy keeping it to myself.
