I have a headcanon that Celestia is a draconequus (Discord's species) with a god complex that transformed itself into a pony and used its nigh-omnipotent power to take over Equestria and brainwash the masses into thinking it was a deity. Luna is Celestia's draconequus sister who followed Celestia to Equestria and played a part in her takeover, which included displacing the actual pony rulers of ancient Equestria.
