Wondering if my voice is good enough to try an a capella version of the song?
I can hold a tune, I just have a terrible sounding voice...

If you're gonna process vocals, you want to be a little more subtle. If you got FL, you might have Newtone, and there are other vocal processing units out there, some very expensive and very nice(Melodyne, Auto-tune) and some free and ok-ish (gvst gsnap).
Also, if your school has a choir, take the shit out of that class. It is literally the best way to get sounding good in a safe environment. You learn with lots of people, and everyone's singing so you don't feel too pressured. If you mess up, you can blend in and rejoin. It teaches you breath control, pitch control, intonation, and live performance techniques, as you guys will most likely get to sing for groups.
TL;DR: Get GVST Gsnap and get some practice, lay off the reverb/delay.
