Postby Epesy » 24 Apr 2013 20:45

Hello, For a while now ive been making music and my first 2 songs seemed to gain some popularity, Howeve while my firsts got around a 100 or so views my 3rd only has 9. I dont know why so I want to see if the song is good or bad, If it is good I would appreciate if you showed this to your friends and a like or a sub wouldnt hurt ;)

Your work is really quite spectacular for having so little views. I would suggest not using a lot of sample beats from FL Studio, because while it may sound cool it's been done before and it gets a bit stale no matter how well you use it. You build well, but every so often it seems you miss a golden opportunity to switch it up, and just keep going along the melodic line. That happens in your third song at 2:05, where it uses the same main synth sample until the end of the song. I would suggest that you at least add in some counterpoint synths to make it sound a bit more original and give flavor to the main line; a good song can carry a tune, but a great song can complement it.

If you're concerned about views on Youtube, that site is very fickle. Sometimes things can explode, and sometimes they just sit there. If you want to see if your music is good for the genre and style you use, I'd recommend sending it to a site like Equestria Daily and seeing if it's featured.

Fly High:
The only thing I can really say for this one is that the bass could stand to be compressed with the kick to glue them together better. Besides that, the only thing I noticed is that you might want to cut the lows on your reverb to keep the mix from getting too muddy in the lower frequencies. Low frequencies don't play well with reflections, and you tend to lose a lot of information you don't expect to lose.

A Lonely Night:
It's rare that I say this as a critique, but this track is rather repetitive. This is really only an issue in this case because you don't complement the musical repetition with effects or shifts in tone quality. If you want something that's a bit repetitive, teasing the listener with more subtle changes is a good way to keep them interested.

You also are letting your kick clip. Be careful there. Always remember to mix at -3 dB or lower before you do your mastering.

And again, cut the lows on your mixing reverb. It's okay to throw it onto your explosion sound effects, because those are typically not getting in the way of a beat (since they usually play in breakdowns), but for everything else, you want the reverb to be most prominent in the mid-range.

Vinyl Record:
A lot of your problems in the previous tracks are corrected. At this point, you want to work on overall composition. The track just kind of jumps from concept to concept with no transitions or lead-ins. In most situations, it's just a good idea to let the listener know you're about to change things up on them, so having some transitions that guide them along makes them feel like they know where they're going.

Ehhhhhh. Not only was Fly High taken from that tutorial, but Vinyl Record is pretty much just Blake Reary's Hanging On.

I can't really critique this knowing all that. Who knows, maybe A Lonely Night was taken from something too. :/

First one sounded fine, but nothing notable. I would say it just wants a little more variety. Try glitching, vocal sampling, putting effects on the instruments and changing them over time (like reverb or an EQ sweep).

Second song: I liked the notation of the lead synth, but the whole thing over all sounded very ruff and clippy. Watch the volume bars for clip detection (idk exactly what your DAW will look like, but it should turn red) on both the master and individual tracks. Also, it was a little long. You can only listen to the same repeated sequence so many times.

Third song: Good length, OK variance, again nothing seems strictly wrong with it, besides it gets, well, boring/repetitive after a while. Maybe I'm just not a fan of the genre, but I like the song to really grow and evolve and feature many different musical ideas.

Something to try: have a completely new instrument (grand piano, sax, guitar, plucked strings) come in for a bit of solo in the middle, and drop out the D&B for a bit. Or, start stuttering your loops for a nice glitchy feel. Variety is the main thing you seem to be missing. Using a DAW and VST's and all that means that you can keep layering on complexity and new sounds without a whole lot of effort.

Listen very to the instrumental of Glaze's tracks. There is so much going on it's an eargasm every time! Supernatural and Lost on the Moon are my favorite instrumentals to exemplify this.
