New Owl City song snippet sounds eerily similar to Archie

I must be going crazy.

Maybe it's just me, but at the 15 second mark of a new Owl City song preview called "Bombshell Blonde," the song in question begins to sound strikingly similar to the part beginning at 2 minutes into the 4 minute and 40 second version of Archie's Art of the Dress remix.

They're not exactly the same, but it's close enough for me to have had immediately recollected Archie's remix the moment I heard the Owl City preview. I couldn't help but start a discussion topic to see if I was the only one who heard the similarity.

Is it just a commonly used sound, or maybe a certain synth or waveform they both used? If so, I would love to know what it is. I love the way it sounds.

I can't say I've heard alot of Owl City, but I'd definitely say the sound you are looking at is common. The first song on youtube with the tag "moombacore" had a variation of this sound with some reverb on it. It is hard to find an interesting or outstanding use of this sound, but some people just pull it off better than others in their mixes, making it more memorable. I know I tend to associate specific sounds with specific artists. First song I went to for that sound was none other than Archie's track "I Need More Ponies!"

I'm not sure how to get that exact sound, but it definitely sounds like a square-saw of some sort with a square-sine an octave lower. I bet you could do a pretty good mockup of the sound quite easily in Massive.

I suppose it is likely that it was just a coincidence, I listened to "I Need More Ponies" and was able to recognize the sound there as well. Thanks for the tips on recreating it too!

Still, it seems to me that even the arrangement is similar with both song snippets being compared. More sounds the same than just the square-saw with the square-sine, I mean. (I probably just need some sleep, I think the sun is coming back up again...)

If borrowing were the case, Owl City would be the one to have borrowed from Archie. The previews were released just recently on August 9th. That's part of the reason I was intrigued by the similarity in the first place. Adam Young seems to be an avid user of the internet based on the memes he references on various social sites, so could it be possible that he was aware of the Art of the Dress remix by being a brony himself?

Wow, really? I guess I just assumed that accomplished artists such as Archie or Owl City would be producing new sounds, rather than using presets or taking them from elsewhere. I still have a lot to learn about how good music is made.

Well even Avicii admited he used drum loops and Presets Which is also somwhat the reason I think Deadmau5 don't like his music because Deadmau5 pretty much does everything from scratch while other people become succesful from only doing half as much as he does.

But there's no problem with that either. If you want to do everything yourself, why not? I mean, I respect people that do, but when someone gets that professional sound and half his stuff is presets and loops, it's still just fine. When you do that though, there's less of a chance you will make an impact than by being original.

Though Archie wasn't very honest about it. I remember reading an interview with Him and Jakob Liedholm where Archie said he constantly wrote melos even though Leto and Again and Again pretty much sounds almost exactly the same melody wise with only few changes.

But yeah that somewhat gives me a different view on him than others have. I would like him a lot more if he atleast could be honest about it.

I like giving people the benefit of the doubt, and I love it when they are transparently honest. My theory is that he was being honest, although with his knowledge of the genre and the fact that he listens to it all the time, he probably subconsciously wrote melodies that are very similar or the same as other artist's tracks. As far as his track construction goes, I've heard a few tracks that I think he copied directly because he wanted the experience, then re-wrote parts so they could be his own releases.

He's getting way better than when I first saw him making music. Props to him for that, and for getting signed.

But this is a pretty hot topic to discuss and can easily turn into me flaming since I almost hold a grudge towards him because of this. But personally I think he could atleast tell people he ended up doing something like this. And why can he get away with it? When I can't? I listen to this type of music too.

I remember writing a melody that sounded like 'Toulouse' by Nicky Romero and when I showed it to my friends they told me it was low and I should feel bad and that I was a bad musician that just stole melodies, so I never uploaded it anywhere. While Archie gets amounts of love by everyone for doing the same thing I did... It's just not fair. Ever since that I've tried to do everything within my power to as original melos as possible.

They sound the same... That's it. They don't use even remotely the same melodies/chrods, just similar synths and similar rhythm (plus in prog. house, many songs have similar rhythm anyways, because that's the style of the genre). I'm pretty sure I've told people this about 20 times.
