Official Discussion Thread (Ghost Edit)

Postby Bronies Are Cool » 21 Sep 2013 11:27

This is the official discussion thread. Please keep all general discussion locked to this thread. If you want to say something, and its clearly not worthy of having its own thread, this is the thread you should be posting in.

General forumrules still apply.

-no flame
-no spam
-no nsfw content

I like potatoes. I wonder if anyone ever looks back at the OP every once in a while.

Not "we". Everyone specifically Simon. And me sometimes. But, instead of having "status update" posts, we can have discussion posts. Etc, its a good idea for a thread that can exist beside the spam thread. This is not a "replacement" thread. It's more like a side kick if anything. (If that makes sense.)

Still taking ideas

This is a good temporary. If the board will change "don't be a dick" in more concrete, objective rules, this'll be unnecessary.

This is a good temporary solution just because the rule "stay on-topic" keeps it together.

I think this is at the heart of the issue. Just because it says spam doesn't mean that people should be dicks to each other or that Simon should post :3 in every post. Just try not to annoy each other in there or to be hyper sensitive with the flag button either. This is still a music forum and the spam thread is a nice off-topic luxury and it shouldn't be the only incentive to coming here.

Just imagine Makkon's ghost wandering the halls of this place if you need to decide what kind of behavior to exhibit.

I don't think we need 2 spam threads with one well behaved and the other less so.

THe problem here is that most of our discussion is sparked by people's mindless spamming. But I guess this can be of use.

I want to discuss something as the official topic #1:

What is your view on Extreme violence in video games and why?

Don't care because it's not real. If someone were to pull out a gun and shoot someone in front of me I'd definitely be shocked by it but in a video game it's blatantly obvious that the violence is heavily exaggerated.

Example; someone getting shot in the head with a pistol in a video game = bloodsplosion and ridiculous flailing limbs
Someone getting shot in the head with a pistol in real life = non-dramatic slumpy death with some blood. (I saw a video once :I)

Who cares. Video games don't make people a space marine, surgeon or strive to posses magical powers, so why would they make people violent? To say video games DO make people violent you have to be so selective that you ignore all the other possible influences games could give, which is fucking stupid.

Obviously video games don't turn regular guys into maniacs who go shoot up public places. There are many other factors involved like personality/brain abnormalities.

But do violent video games contribute to people becoming violent in a much smaller way? Say road rage for example; just yelling at the guy who cuts you off in traffic even though he would never hear you. Will playing grand theft auto all day make you even slightly more likely to yell at someone in anger?

Videos games (and other media) definitely shape who you are, but to what extent?

It reminds me how people blame on video games for their violent acts, when movies are much more violent than video games.

I agree. Video games can shape you a bit but to what extent. I know that when I started watching mlp, I felt influenced to be a less judgemental person and a nicer person and someone who does not swear as much, etc. TV shows you watch can also influence you like a video game can

yes, and whenever I watch Pirates of the Caribbean I walk around with a pirate costume talking in a pirate voice. For real, this happens.

That is amazing. When I was in Disney land on the pirates I the Caribbean ride, I was talking like a pirate to the point that everybody on the ride wanted to throw me off the boat. :3

Bronies Are Cool wrote:What is your view on Extreme violence in video games and why?

Video games, in the start, are a fantasy, a way for the player to become a surgeon or a space marine for a short while, without actually going through all the crap needed to reach their idealized image of one: perhaps a hero or a badass alien slayer.

Thus, video games where the player is required to kill or otherwise make use of violence - GTA, MK, and whatever the newest CoD-like FPS is - can be a great way for one to channel their own anger without actually harming living beings. This, and my own experience as an impulsive, violent person who used to play violent games leads me to believe...

the4thImpulse wrote:Videos games (and other media) definitely shape who you are, but to what extent?

...that the video game doesn't shape your way to be - instead, one's personality is what attracts you to violent video games. People responsible of shootings (the reason this whole violent video game drama is constantly being discussed) are inherently violent and happened to be attracted to certain video games, and not "made" violent by said game.

I lol'd

On another topic, I think "Official Spam Thread" is a sure way to get, y'know, spam and not actual discussion in said thread. How about referring to it as a "lobby", a "lounge" (not sure what term I'm going for) for general chit-chat (since any topic actually worth discussing will get it's own thread)?

I would say that violence in video games may attract some people, and may affect others.

Regardless I have high hopes that allowing this to exist will not be a bad decision on my part, but whether that's the case or not is almost entirely up to your actions as a group.

I believe BaC should add these rules to his original post
