<pony><Original>Looking For Diamonds In Heaven [Electro-ish]

Postby Viricide Filly » 20 Feb 2013 16:06

I worked SERIOUSLY hard on this song, probably the hardest yet. I think it's good enough to post here now. I know my previous stuff like Sprite, Octavia Inc etc was below everyone's standards (Even mine now), but I hope this song will show you I'm trying to get on the right track.

PLEASE give criticism.

That kick is a little too heavy, it's muddying up the song too much. Particularly at 1:52 when you have that heavy sub bass fighting with the heavy kicks. I'd suggest rolling off the sub frequencies of the kicks to leave more breathing room for the bass synths, then maybe brightening the kicks a little by boosting mid to high range (find a sweet spot) to make it stand out more.

I like the sub synth, it has a nice rythm and melody that contributes to the song, but it's not very audible due to it being drowned out by the kicks. I'd also suggest rolling off all the bass frequencies of the synths that don't need it. I think this whole song is too bass competitive.

I just realized that boosting mid to high frequencies in kicks is typically bad advice unless you are specifically going for a distorted kick sound. (It's been a while since I reviewed or even mixed anything).

Rather, it's common practice to boost 75Hz-150Hz in kicks, give or take depending on style. In certain cases where you want the bass and kick drums to occupy it's own space, you'll roll off the kicks below 75Hz (again, give or take depending on style)

In other cases (like in trap music) both the bass and kicks will work in unison.

Anyways I talk too much you don't have to take anything I say seriously XD! Good luck!
