now that we're already on the
second round of this thing, I might as well type up what it's about:
Toastbeard's Video Game Remix Compo! (VRC)I'd like to clear up the timeline, and how this compo works.
Timeline1. on the first friday of each month, a new VRC opens up.
2. on the last friday of that month, the VRC closes. the sync is that afternoon (or night, or whatever. timezones you know.)
3. voting opens after the sync, and closes on the following tuesday. Voting is more important here than the weekual compos, so vote!
4. After tuesday, if there are any ties / complications, zorg or sci will hunt down the winners and figure out what the next theme will be
5. after that, this entire list repeats again as the next month begins
so, remixing. What is remixing?DON'T JUST SWAP OUT THE INSTRUMENTS. (though live/acoustic covers are acceptable, at least try to improv a little)
re-arrange the song. adjust everything to fit a new style. build something new around that bassline or chord progression. add a counter-melody.
basically: make it interesting.
additional note about mashups: they are allowed but STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. If you just take the vocals from one song and lay it on top of a song from this month's video game soundtrack, it will be insta-deleted.
Voting and song selectionyou can remix any song from the soundtrack of the selected game of the month.
the winner of each round gets to select a game soundtrack to remix for the next compo. Only commercial games (no flash games) with ORIGINAL soundtracks (ie, not licensed music, not ambiance/sfx-only) are allowed.
Additionally, the game in question must have some resource / reference files for everyone to use. If none exist, you have to either transcribe each song yourself or pick a different game.
(Generally, most games will have a MIDI available on vgmusic.com or mirsoft.info, so that may help with game selection)
Right now, we'd prefer if you have some method of contact (like...being in the IRC channel, or giving an email or place you can be messaged in case you win), but if you don't have one, you can just enter your game choice in the description.
