Righty-o, you guys probably remember Soft Spectrum, as it was released yesterday! Amazing work with that, and I hope the community benefited. I'd like to announce another album I'll be hosting in a similar matter - I have yet to get the name in, but it will be a funk album (e.g. French House, Disco, Glitch Hop.) The scoring will be similar as to Soft Spectrum, and will centre on the idea of giving helpful feedback.
February 7th - All Tracks due February 7th - 13th Judging February 14th - Album Release
RULES ABOUT YOUR FILE - it MUST be hosted on an external site (e.g. dropbox, box, mediafire) - it MUST be an .mp3 file for judging - it MAY NOT run over 10 minutes - Please include the link to your file in the email, along with your ARTIST NAME and TITLE as you wish it to be read in a release. - Please make the subject "Compilation" - - use of copyrighted material (INCLUDING MLP SAMPLES) IS DISCOURAGED, but will not result in an automatic disqualification
What the Funk is Funk? It's seemingly a broad genre. I'll link a few examples of what I'll be considering funk, but feel free to be creative and take a new spin on things. Just keep in mind that styles like metal and dubstep are usually not funky.
- Unlike Soft Spectrum, feel free to make your song as disturbing as you possibly can! Go ahead and make a song make out of samples that say "fuck", I don't care. Just make it funky, man.
- If you are Remixing a song, make sure you have the original composers consent BEFORE you start anything.
- Do not release your full song until the album is out. You may release teasers. (Note that there may be a recommended date to finish teasers to have them featured: I'll keep you all posted.)
FAQ
Q: How many tracks can I submit? A: You can submit more than one, but don't give us 10 to listen to. This is a community album, not your album. It's best to spend the time perfecting one song rather than trying to improve your chances by submitting many.
Q: How many tracks will be accepted? A: It depends on how many entries we receive, and the quality of the tracks.
Q: Why aren’t you (x)? A: If you have a suggestion, give me your Skype name and I'll add you to the official chat. We can discuss your suggestion there.
Q: Can I do dubstep? A: If it's funkystep. Whatever. Usually that's kind of what I think Koan-style Glitch Hop to be.
Q: Who judges the tracks? A: To be decided! I will choose judges in time.
Q: How does the judging work? A: Expression - How well a song is able to convey a convincing and consistent atmosphere. For example, dynamics and overall musicality. Composition - The skill in which the bare notes were written. Mixing + Mastering - How well each voice cooperated with one another with minimal conflict; how natural and clear a song is. Sound Design - How well were instruments made and used? If the song uses samples or a vocalist, it is weighed in this area. Funk Factor - Groovy. Average - Average of all scores Recommend - Would this judge like to see the song in question on the album? Notes - Anything we had to add? Q: Does my song have to be pony? A: Your song can be pony, but it doesn't need to be.
Q: Is this a free album? A: Unlike Soft Spectrum which was completely free, I am playing around with the idea of accepting payment and then splitting it evenly among the album features. I understand it feels good to give to charity, but sometimes artists can use the boost of compensation, however small. This is up for debate, so feel free to discuss.
Q: Can I use Copyrighted material? A: Okay... just don't go overboard. Try to get permission first.
Q: How come you take all the credit for this shit? A: I don't, I'll be sure to tag you as an artist as I did in Soft Spectrum, and give credit where needed.

but seriously: how are you supposed to make glitch hop or (ESPECIALLY) french house without sampling? of course, "you could just sample something that isn't copyrighted" but THE BLOOD OF FRENCH HOUSE IS OLDEN DISCO TUNES
I'd much much much rather have a 200% free album with the ability to grab copyrighted samples. I think we're safe under fair use anyway. (right?)

I stongly agree with this, without sampling you are losing a lot of the feelings of the funk genres. It would be best to make this a free album and stay safe under fair use rights.
I don't believe you are exempt from copyrights even if your song is free - you are distributing copyrighted material which is still illegal. (But I can be wrong, though this is what I have read many places.) Yes, using MLP samples is seemingly illegal too, but Hasbro is pretty chill about it.
So it's either break the law or break the law a little more than that.
and it doesn't necessarily become illegal if you use a bar of music from a copyrighted song, because fair use exists. (especially in the case of microsampling.)

!!!
so can you scratch out "NO COPYRIGHT CREATIVE-BUFFERS" and replace it with "BIGBEAT / FUNKY BREAKS" as genre examples? ie fatboy slim (pretty muchanythinghe's touched), Nideki Naganuma (like thislike that), Groove Armada (mostly with "Your Song")
Has anyone else submitted anything for this? It worries me that there hasn't been much conversation on this topic; it makes me think this isn't going to actually happen ;_;
EDIT: A good name for this album would totally be "Funk it" *shot*
