<nonpony><original><electronic> Anforium - Into the Light

Postby Anforium » 14 Oct 2012 15:47

Finally made a new track, and I'm pretty proud of it. Some kind of experimental progressive dubstep. :P

Software: I'm original, so i use Sunvox. I used to use LMMS, but the crashing drove me insane.

I can see some potential with this, and the individual parts are for the most part really good.

However, the transitions between sections are very sketchy and catch me off-guard, too much so. Getting some surprise is nice, but it felt a bit awkward.
The progression through the song was a little weird, but it is experimental, so that's usually to be expected.
The drums are sometimes drowned out nearly completely, especially at the dubstep part. Dubstep tends to love its drums, and I couldn't hear them much.

The majority of synths you used were really nice and pleasant sounding other than the bass near the beginning, which sounded a bit bland.

My favorite thing about the track was definitely everything before the dubstep and parts of the dubstep, although the light, hearty synth with the heavy, aggressive wobbles kinda clashed.

I understand it is experimental, and I did like a lot of this, but I feel ya need to work on your transitions and progression of the overall track, mostly. 7/10.

I realized after I released it that some side chain compression on the drums would have made it better.

But to clarify, which transitions exactly are you talking about?

One place is 1:28 or around there. There's a pause with an effect fading out, and a synth similar to the last one comes in. It feels a bit unnatural. Right after that at about 1:40 is that rough synth that comes in quite abruptly. That one may just be my personal taste.
2:02 is the one that really gets me. Sudden change to that bell thing you had at the beginning, and then sudden wobbles. There's little time in between with no smooth connection.

The 1:28 was actually my least favorite transition, definetely agree with you on this one.

The 1:40 I still rather like

2:02 This may be surprising, but I actually really like this one. It introduces the tempo change in a rather awkward and sudden way, which is what I was going for.

The one you didn't mention that I thought you would is at 2:13, which is another I'm not particulary proud of.

I kinda like 2:13 myself, but y'know, differing tastes.

2:02, I can see where you're coming from, and I've seen people do similar stuff, but I'm really picky with transitions like that. Your instruments clashed with each other to me, and that's why it seemed weird.

Now that I think about it, a pony sample might have sounded better there.

Thanks for all the feedback though, really helpful!
