Little question for FL Studio users

Postby DJ TATCM » 01 Oct 2012 15:36

So, I've been looking through all the VST's that come with FL Studio, and I found one called Soundgoodizer, "powered by Maximus". It consists of just one knob, and four buttons at the bottom, A, B, C, and D. I'm just wondering, what exactly does it do, and what are the letters for?

Thanks! I'll make sure to write that down. Something tells me that I am going to use the Deity Fucker preset quite often...

Soundgoodizer give you 4 presets from maximus (a, b, c and d) and I believe the knob is a wet/dry knob.

It can be used to quickly add fullness to a synth sound, but I would not recommend it for general use as it doesn't give much control. I rarely use it but then I do I find turning it up more than 25% just make it sound bad. It can work well though in certain situations if you set it to be just barely there. The more I learn about mixing and how to use effects like delay and reverb, the less I use soundgoodizer.

I'd say don't use it, but curiosity will drive you to try it out anyway. I say use it, then mix your song properly and give the kicks the proper room, and see which one you like better. Also, if you're using that and you have Maximus, just go whole hog and use Maximus.

It's a very, very interesting combination of multiband compression and eq. It has fancy envelopes and turns songs into bricks in ten seconds flat. I think it's a problem with the compressor ramping the sound right into the limiter, but then again, what do I know?

If you really want to know what they do, open up Maximus and select the respective preset ('a', 'b', etc. )

If you know your way around Maximus, everything'll make sense.

Otherwise, well...

Too bad Maximus thinks multiband compression has to be exciting, so it makes everthing a different color.

I can't look at that plugin.

Soundgoodizer is 4 Maximus presets.
Maximus is a multiband maximizer.
A multiband maximizer is a multiband compressor set up so it removes all dynamic range.
A multiband compressor Splits the signal into frequency ranges (bands) using filters, and gives you a compressor on every one.

Also, don't use it.

I use Maximus and I must say it's a great tool. You can do very cool stuff with it, more than just compression, if you know how to.

I actually use it a lot... Just don't tell people if you do because they will get on your case on how "nooby" you are. But hey, if it's easy and it works, why not use it? Just don't put it on every track/ the master because just no.

MLP has far superior character development to Maximus.

Also butts.

Thanks everyone for your help! I think I'll just stick to that one neat-o compressor from Mixcraft for now, but I'll look into Maximus. :)

Touche. Your signature made me laugh!

On topic: What everyone else has said. Soundgoodizer is just a dry/wet knob for a few presets in Maximus. The presets are titled as "a", "b", "c" and "d" in Maximus, so if you want to know how Soundgoodizer's effects are achieved, go look at that.

I don't think you should refrain from using it. As long as it sounds good, use it! What I would suggest is that you learn what Soundgoodizer does to the effected sound. Try to recreate its effects yourself and understand why it happens. Then you can modify your sounds with more freedom.

Pretty much what I said -.-

I think the reason Maximus is disliked by many, is the default preset colors the sound a lot. While this can be good, to enhance your sound, it also means you lose some control over it. Also, multiband maximizing and compression.

Edit:
As GumsOfGabby will describe in a later post, Maximus has a perfect default preset, but does for some reason not use it as the actual default. The first impression is compromised. (Seems like it's something Image Line does a lot. For instance - Sytrus.)

I use soundgoodizer to give something a little bit more oomph, and I usually slap on maximus to the master and fiddle with it till it sounds good and so the color isnt changed. It is a good tool, but it is flawed.

Well...I...Umm...

As a suitable opening phrase, I thought you were trying to pull the conversation back to topic. I now realize it was a regular colon, and not a semicolon. My bad. And the fact that even with a semicolon, it wouldn't make much sense to assume so either way.

I do realize this pulls it even further away from topic, but I can compensate!

This is a good observation. You can't really tell how your changing the sound, because your starting point, once the effect is applied, is so fargone from the sound itself.

For some odd reason, Maximus opens as the "a" Soundgoodiser preset (Dry/Wet 100%) by default. If you go to presets and select "Default", Maximus actually opens as a blank canvas. It sets all 3 bands (and master) to a brickwall limit at 0dB and all pre/post gains, saturation settings and stereo effects to 0. So as long as your signal isn't going above 0dB, there should be no change in the sound at all.

When you set Maximus to "Default" the only effect that is being applied (which isn't compression with the threshold set to 0dB) is the low cut - set to 20Hz...the edge of human hearing.

So, really when Maximus is in its true default state and your audio isn't clipping, there is absolutely no change applied to the signal.

Soundgoodizer in music is kinda like steroids in baseball. People use it as an easy out and an edge but often don't worry about the side effects. That and no one wants to publically ADMIT they use it.
