[Headphones] Sennheiser HD 419 vs. Skullcandy Hesh 2.0

Postby itroitnyah » 26 Aug 2012 20:19

I just bought myself FLS10 signature edition and am also looking to upgrade my current Sony MDR-NC7's that I've already worn out a ton. The headphone price I'm looking at is around the $50-$70 range, and I have my eyes set on the two headphones you see in the title:

Sennheiser HD 419

Skullcandy Hesh 2.0

I've heard good things about both Skullcandy and Sennheiser, and the headphones appear to be really similar, except for the energy usage, magnet type, and max volume. So their sound quality should be pretty similar. But I also want to know a bit about their comfort. They both look like they're comfortable, so I don't think that I have much to worry about there. Another part that I'm a bit concerned about is the bass quality. I've read and watched a few reviews of both products, and the Sennheiser's are said to have good bass, and so are the Skullcandy's. Lol. I'm really over analyzing this, aren't I?

So I want your guys's opinions over which is better before I make my purchase. Or, if you think you have something that you think is better, feel free to tell me about them. Headphones, earbuds, I don't care. Sound quality, bass, and comfort are my 3 main worries. Durability is also a minor concern of mine.

I'm an owner of SH203 and 449, and both the former and the latter have nice, clear, clean bass. However, those are not studio headphones and the sound is not flat; the bass is a little colourized.

I'm not quite rich enough to get studio quality headphones, I just want something that is good for around that price range, as of now.

Skullcandy headphones are just loaded with bass like any other mainstream-audience headphones (Beats, for example). And not really in a great way, because I've used them before and it just muddies up everything, and when you're mixing in FL Studio that will mess everything up.

I'd go with the Senns. Still not studio-quality, but it's getting there.

Or, be like me and buy a pair of refurbished Sennheiser HD-280 headphones (Most "refurbished" pairs are really just returned pairs that were hardly to never used). On amazon, a refurbished pair goes for the top part of your price range, but they sound great and warm which helps bring out the bass a bit. Plus, like most Senns they're incredibly durable comfortable, I can wear mine easily for hours at a time.

The Sens are probably a better option, but you should look at some open headphones too as they're for studio usee. They tend to have better soundstage(and worse isolation of course).

Go with the Sens, Most skullcandy headphones are colorized and too bassy for production, and they break easier than most headphones.

I would have saved up a little more money and got Sennheiser 280pro's.

Rule of thumb. Never buy consumer hardware for industry production. As in, hi fi speakers instead of monitors, overpriced consumer cans instead of production headphones, an Android tablet instead of a Wacom, a handicam for film shooting, a pocket camera for a magazine shoot, etc etc.

The results will always be sub par.

I would have looked for used studio headphones.
When I was looking for my current headphones (AKG K-240 Mk.II), I found several used K-240:s for sale within your budget in US.

http://www.amazon.com/AKG-Acoustics-K-2 ... B0001ARCFA

They had many of these, very old and worn, in my last school. I still loved them and ended up buying myself K-240's.

AKG K240's are more suited for orchestral/acoustic composition IMO. I've tried them with electronic stuff, and while they're miles beyond any consumer headphones, they don't deliver as well with artificial sounds. Sennheisers, Beyerdynamics, Audio-Technica and even some Sony headphones can do better for electronic works. (Opinion stuff)

But, eh, whatever works for you, I guess. I used to use Pioneer DJ Headphones for the longest time, no wonder my old works sound so light on the bass :C

However, I will agree there is nothing wrong with buying used studio headphones, since usually they can go through alot of crap and still come out sounding fine. If you buy ones labeled "Like Brand New" (Use your discretion on how trustworthy the seller is though!), usually they'll be superb.

Good choice, itroitnyah!
