Postby senntenial » 08 Jul 2012 17:30

How do I recreate the lo-fi piano sound found here?

I have guitar rig if it helps...
I just am not sure what the effect is called

One thing it's resampled and chopped up a bit making it sound glitchy and uneven.
Aside from that try using EQ and removing all the lower and upper frequencies so it's just the mids and layer on some record hiss.

I hear that now that you say it, I'm also wondering if there is some sort of slight pitch modulation? Ya know like, slightly going up and down in pitch like an old recording...

Yeah this can get that sound, it's pretty useful for that old timey effect though be careful, that thing is really sensitive and you have to end up playing with it a bit to get something that doesn't sound too overboard with the effect.

The guitar in the very beginning of this was done how I described with and with that wow and flutter plugin.

You need to get izotope vinyl and put that on a piano. It's free.

You might also try resampling it to something like 32,000 Hz, 22,050 Hz, or even 16,000 Hz. Basically this will be removing some of the high frequencies the way a low pass filter would, but in a subtly digital "lo fi" way. I can't really tell if that's what they did here, but it might've been part of it. Some of the original sampling equipment only went up to 32,000 or 22,050, so sometimes that's part of the old school hip hop aesthetic.

To do that, either use a wave editor like Audacity/Wavosaur, or... wait, y'know what, just use TB TimeMachine--there's a free version included in the trial plugin pack (just follow the "download evaluation" link or whatever). I might also suggest playing with JB Ferox, but I don't think it's available anywhere anymore. (It's been replaced by the no-longer-free TB Ferox.)

Shelve off at around 5-10khz so the high end won't give it's modern-ness away, and ramp out anything under 50hz. Also I'd try sampling a real piano instead of midi, human influence over an instrument adds a lot of depth. That track probably got its warm effect by coming from vinyl or tape, depending on where it's sampled from.
Warning: May cause rapid chest hair growth.
