Making my music better (help me suck less)

Postby TechnoMetalDude » 07 Jul 2012 14:59

Hi, i have been making music for a while, mostly hardstyle or electro, and i was wondering if there is anything important to make my songs sound less flat, by that i mean i want them to sound interesting and a bit more impressive, there must be some key things i am forgetting. I want it to sound deeper i guess, is there anything that i should add or make.

here is some of my stuff for reference.

Some good mixing could really let that Gabber kick stand out on the second track. I would put more highs in that lead too... if you can't add more highs just program/get a preset for a new synth and replace that. Other than mixing you could add groove, automation, and the vocals could be placed a bit better so it gives more emphasis to the overall track.
Great start though.

Thanks, on the second song i didn't mix with speakers, i used headphones. There is a big difference between my headphones and speakers, so yeah. I learned my lesson.

Just remember that when you put one sound and it comes in contact with another sound occupying the same frequency then you will encounter a lot of mud... especially in the 200-800 hz area where all the lower mid basses start clashing against each other.

I know, I try to use an 12 band eq just to make sure that it does not make horribly distorted bass sounds. Which i used to get when i wasn't as good at mixing, and in no way am i implying that i am good at it.

try getting a parametric eq with a spectral analyzer built in, don't boost frequencies completely; instead boost/cut them by 3 db's. Also remember to cut out anything under 40 hz as most speaker systems can't reproduce a frequency that low.

It should work... just get a spectral analyzer just to know what frequencies you want to boost or cut

I think you're better off cutting a bit less. Even (relatively) cheap subwoofers that go in cars and stuff can reproduce sounds below 40hz. It doesn't take a really expensive system to go that low.
10hz and below functions similarly to DC offset in that it pretty much just eats headroom, and no regular speaker system will ever reproduce it.
20hz is the lower limit of human hearing, but I don't think any regular system will go this low either.
30hz is the lower limit of a lot of good sound systems (or so I've been told).
Personally, I highpass everything around 25hz at least. I find that it helps the compressor action on my kick drums, among other things.

a nicely placed 17hz sub bass creates a really creepy atmosphere, and I like doing that. So I rarely cut out those lows. Just want to mention that there are instances where even non-audible frequencies can be used to your advantage~
