<remix of pony>Cyrricky - Nightmare Night (4thImpulse Remix)

Postby the4thImpulse » 18 Apr 2012 12:25

This is my first dubstep track I have finished, Ihave other wip's but they are not going anywhere fast. I am new to the production of dubstep so I have no idea what I am doing right in the listeners eyes, I think I did a good job but knowing what other people think would be great.
Youtube messed up the sound quility so I will embed the soundcloud version below.

Awwww, have to wait for the upcoming album? :P It does sound neat, a really chill dubstep. Frankly, the only thing I'd think to criticize is the lack of reverb on the initial snares, but it's not a song-breaking thing at all :)

Listening to the album now, just finished this one, and me gusta mucho. For a first attempt at dubstep, it has some really, really good stuff going on. Just like I said on the first version, I do love the second section of dubstep more than the first, mostly for the sound design, but just overall it really works and I consider it a much stronger remix than mine, which precedes this one on the album
Youtube -- Soundcloud -- Tumblr -- Bandcamp (new album out!)

I can't feel my brain.

Thank you, that second part was much more fun to make but it doesn't work for a main drop in a song too well. I thought your remix was great too (as I have commented on your thread)

The album is out now in case you didn't know. What do you mean by the intial snares, do you mean the very first ones you hear in the intro or just after the first drop? The ones in the intro were made to have no reverb so I can get those snare rolls as clear as possible. The other ones I guess I could've added more verb.

Aye, just bought it today :) I did mean the intro, but I do see your point. Quite the song, definitely going on my iPod!

I thought there were some good ideas in this track, but I did think the wubs were particularly weak sounding. Unfortunately I can't help you out there though. :\

I think I know exactly what you mean, would a sub bass pressence help this or would reworking the synthesis of the wubs be better?

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I think what the wubs are missing is more harmonic content, they seem very focused in the lower frequencies, though a bit more sub probably wouldn't hurt at all. The "OMG THIS BASS IS SO HUGE" sounds tend to fill up pretty much the entire frequency range with the sub just humming along beneath. I heard somewhere that the bass is kinda like the guitars in metal music, you focus your tone around the lower midrange/bass and the highs and leave a scoop in the midrange.

I can't really give any clear advice on this, it seems like everyone figures out their own method for making these things. Distortion, layering, EQ and compression are your friends! Other then that it's really only a trial and error thing.

As for the track I really like it, production wise it's very focused and clear. The slow tempo gives it this nice kind of swagger which is exactly what dubstep is all about. I really can't critique it as a dubstep track though since it's more of a liquidstep-y thing and its unique sound defies the genre norm set in place. Or something.

This gives me a lot to think about, thank you :D

I had a lot of trouble figuring out how I was going to make dubstep, everything people told me told I could not grasp or enjoy doing so I didn't know what I was doing going into this track. I pretty much created my own method/workflow in this track and I had a absolute blast making this. As you likely here a lot of bitcrusher and distortion was used (with the obvious eqing/compression/sidechaing).
