Average song completion time?

Postby GHO5T_Official » 07 Apr 2012 18:07

How long does it usually take you to complete a song? I usually start finish and render in about 4 hours all together.

Am I rushing it?

For me, it depends. My two favorite songs I made took a big difference in time to make.

Population control - 2 and a half hours(and it's probably my smoothest song)
Assertiveshy - About 10 hours(but I worked my facking ass of on that one)

Then we get to my new song(Pipe down, Taz), which is full of sloppy transitions.
about 11 hours.

Buuutttt all my other songs took between 3-6 hours to complete.

Maybe a little, if you mean all at once. I usually take 2-4 hours to lay down a basic skeleton of a track (basic set of synths, structure, chord progression), then let it sit for anywhere from half a day to a full week before I consider it fully done. Just this morning I took about 4 hours redoing a track I had considered somewhat done for a week, and it's a hell of a lot better now, I think.

I can't feel my brain.

depends on my mood. I'm pretty new to music making, and so it takes me 8-12 hours. Although I think that has nothing to do with it. It's more of that I either get distracted, or because the DAW I'm using crashes every now and then, or its because I have to share the computer >.<

Increases every time I make a new song it seems

Some of my old stuff I'd finish in a few days at max (so idk, anywhere between 10 and 30 hours?)
I'm currently working on a song right now that I've been messing with for over a month, actually going to scrap the project file to start over new with it

considering I synth multiple kicks, bass lines, leads, one shots, indeed 90-95% of every track from scratch. averaging 8min. I'm not really ashamed to admit it can take 3-4 weeks to complete a song.

My most popular song, Rarity Kills Sweetie Belle, took something like 2 hours, a lot of alcohol and a really bad mood. Most of my jazz pieces take a long time, roughly a week to two weeks. (Bar my latest, which I got done in a day or so somehow.)

Really depends on the time of year. If there's a break, I can get stuff done in two to three days. Otherwise, it's on the order of months. There's a song I've been working on since November that's not even halfway done, not because I can't come up with anything, but because I don't have the time to dedicate to finishing it. >.>

It really depends on my level of free time. In reality, I think I put in anywhere from 2-6 hours of solid work into each of my tracks, but depending on how my day looks, that could stretch to a week. So yeah.

Yeah that sounds about right. Don't forget to LISTEN to your tracks and on different equiptment (computer, home stereo, car stereo) to listen for Eq tweeks and things you could do differently. After several listens you should know if its "done" or if there's things you can improve. If its 4 hrs and publish that seems a bit too quick (but that's ultimately your decision and often the difference between a good and great track)

I used to bang songs out in about 2-4 hours but after talking to the folks around here *Cough*Dj-P0n3*Cough* I've been taking a LOT longer on them learning and doing Equalization, compression, etc... It makes a very big difference IMO

^this

I always test it on a larger home system after listening through computer speakers (even fairly high end ones), and find several places that could be improved right away.

Its well worth the time to proerly compress, eq, mix/master everything. I will also add that I probably spend about 4 hours on my kicks alone from the time I pick my samples/synthesize them to when the songs done and they are eq'd/ and shaped they way I want (Note I do not do this all at once).

For me, it takes anywhere from 6-15 hours to make a track. And I still have little to no EQing experience, so I'm skipping out on an essential step in the process.

I can get a track out in maybe 5 hours, but I've had tracks that go beyond 50 before. I don't judge my work on how long it takes me though. Usually the longer ones are when I'm trying something new, or really have to fiddle with it all. I mix as, so if I get stuck on composition, I'll go back and mix what I already have. I finish the track, do about 12 pass throughs, then after a few days go back do further tweaks, then mastering. Wait a day, listen again. If it's still alright, I post it.

Explains why I only have three full songs published on my YouTube, huh?
