My First Song. Feedback greatly appreciated.

Postby Mugofrootbeer » 17 Mar 2012 07:59

Hello fellow musical bronies!
I joined this forum about a week ago because I decided that it was time to stop just thinking about getting into electronic music and actually do something. It also helped that I found a forum where I can feel very safe.
After fiddling around with programs and plugins for the last week I finally made a song!

This is the first song I've ever made so don't expect too much. Feedback would be amazing even if it's just "Keep making music" :)

Also I wasn't sure if this is the right place to post this. It didn't seem right to post it in the music section. :P

actually putting it in the music section is the appropriate place for it. ;)

also feel free to go to the introduction thread and say hi and let us know more about youself.

You've got some good melodies that aren't too repetitve or simple. The instruments are a bit midi-esque so pehaps some more work on those and eq levels will really help. it has some charm to it but also could use a bit of tweaking as it doesn't feel really fully formed quite yet.

One of the things I like about Brony music is that songs when they're done well will point to aspects or scenes of the show and add to the menaing of the song giving it context and a connection to it (just like fanfics, the music should add to the show and be inspired by it).

I'm not sure if this pony-inspired or not (in the music section you can specifiy if something is or isnt) but if it is you're going to have look for that context to why this music is inspired by the show. You can add a vocal sample of course (not that this definitely needs it) but an explanation and an appropriate title will make that more clear. Genre-wise this is kind of in a real grey area so you can decide if you wanna give it a little more of a nudge towards a particular genre in its structure to make it more appealing (my recommendation) or keep it more or less the same.

Welcome to the board :)

Thank you so much DJ Pon-3!

I'll be sure to post this in the proper place next time! :D

All of the synths were just using the presets that came with FL Studio which would explain why they sounded the way they did.

This song was not pony inspired because I figured that if I was going to make a song to start off I should give myself as much freedom as possible, but I will definitely look to ponies for a source of inspiration in the future.

Way better than my first song! Keep it up, play around with EQing, automation, and other stuff. A lot of people look down on presets, but don't listen to them. It IS nice to be able to make your own sounds, but don't feel bad about using presets if they sound good.
how did this get here

10 times more successful than my first go at electronic! Obviously you weren't going for an epic track here, just a first go, but I will say that variation and automation are vital to electronic. More different drum parts/samples as well as loops, and synths, and a stronger sense of harmony. Really though, I think your progressions of melody was solid, which I'm pretty bad at and I've been writing for years.

For a first run a solid job though man. I hope to see you posting more often, its a great place we have here on MLR.
A fews songs in progress at all times!
