<Pony><Original> Oxygen (Feat Almost Anyone) [Nov 18th EDIT]

Postby FritzyBeat » 14 Nov 2013 05:22

NOVEMBER 18 EDIT:

I did a bunch of extra mixing and stuff, and I think I fixed a lot of the stuff that was wrong with the original track.

Now, the original music is still intact and relatively unchanged, but I fixed the sound quality and volume issues, adding a few extra things along the way. Just as before, any advice or tips would be much appreciated ;)

ORIGINAL POST:

So, I THINK I got the tag system down correctly XD

Anyways, as I said in the introduction thread, I've only been in the fandom for a few weeks, and this is my first attempt at making pony-inspired music... ever XD
I mean, I DID post a cover of Pinkie Pie's Smile song on my channel a few days ago, but this is my first real ORIGINAL work, so any compliments, critiques, advice, and/or suggestions will be very much appreciated =)

Hope Y'all like it!

You got the tags correctly, congrats. :P

Composition is a bit generic and poppy for my taste, but nice nevertheless. Great vocals.

Maybe I'd add some more high end in the mastering stage, just because people expect poppy tracks like this to sound all loud and sparkly. A gentle cut in the mids and a high freq boost should do.
oops I dropped the bass

will you pick it up for me

Unorganized feedback:
-I love those chords
-Great vocals and lyrics
-It's really quiet. Needs to be mastered better.
-Chorus is great and I love the melody, however, the high end could use more work. Maybe even add some noise during the chorus to make it feel more full.
-Kick could be compressed better. Overall, the drums are pretty good, though.
-Feels a bit empty in some places.
-Transitions could be smoother. Maybe add in some noise sweep effects or something? That might just be a personal preference, though.

Overall:
I absolutely loved it! I definitely have a soft spot for this kind of house xD
The melody was great, chords were great, composition was pretty good, and the general feel of it was pretty good too!
One thing that really needed improving, though, was the mixing. Some instruments cover the high end well, where as others don't and it generally feels off balance mixing wise. The drums weren't the best, but they were pretty good. I did love the clap, though.
Keep up the good work!

Ok! I'm planning on fixing it up a bit, re-mixing the track and re-uploading it in a few days based on the feedback I've recieved so far, so I'll be sure to remember that while I'm doing so. Thanks Conche!

Wow, thanks for all the feedback Wisp, its really helpful! =D
I will also be keeping all this in mind when re-mixing the track later this week. However, one thing I cannot figure out how to do is boost the overal volume of the track so it isn't so quiet when I export it to Itunes, Youtube, etc...
I use Garageband for my music, and after some quick web-searches, it seems that it is a problem most people have with the program. Unfortunetly I haven't been able to find a solution to this problem yet, so if any of you have any suggestions, I'm all ears

I haven't changed the song on Youtube or Soundcloud yet, so for now just listen to it on Eq Beats until I can get to that ;P

Yes, you definitely fixed a lot of problems with this track by re-mixing it.

About the volume issues: I don't use garageband, so I don't know if you can use VSTs with it, but typically people use mastering VSTs to get the maximum volume with their tracks. I personally use Izotope's Ozone 5 for my mastering and it works out pretty well for me. From what I've heard about garageband, it can be limiting in many ways, so it might be beneficial to purchase a different DAW such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic, Cubase, etc.

Now for some feedback on the re-mixed version of this song:
-You certainly improved the volume in most places, but it clips in some places, and it's very noticeable. Proper mastering could definitely fix this.
-I'm noticing the highs are almost overwhelming at some points. Most noticeably in the drums. I suggest taking the highs down in some places, because it actually hurts the ears at some points.
-The chorus still feels a bit empty, and I think that's because it doesn't have a big enough bass yet. I'm hardly noticing any bass at all, actually. Maybe a nice saw bass could fix that? You might even need to layer another synth onto the chorus or make the current synth louder. I love the sound of the current synth right now, though.

I actually took a quick try at mastering the original track (not the re-mixed version) back when I posted my first comment, and if you want to check it out, here's a dropbox link: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/172027973/oxygen%20remastered.mp3
Honestly, I wasn't able to do much to improve the highs of the original track because of the hats having so much highs. Raising the highs any more would make the hats unbearably sharp.

EDIT: I also noticed that the files I download off eqbeats are only 192 kbps. I'm not sure if that's something that eqbeats does or if you just didn't export it at full high quality, but you might want to figure out how to export at 320 kbps to get the most high quality sound.

Wow, thanks For all the trouble you've gone to to review this track and REALLY help me out =D
TO be honest, I am rather new to the whole music industry, so I had to look up nearly everything you said since eI had no idea what you meant XP
Yeah, I'm not very educated on all this stuff =P BUT, I did learn a lot from this, and I will be sure to keep it all in mind for the next time IO produce a track, thank you again Wisp! =D

Hmmm, thats strange. Did you download them before or after I posted the remixed versions, and did you download them directly from Eq Beats or the Mediafire links in the descriptions? If from Eq Beats, then I assume its just something they do themselves, but if you downloaded them off my media fire links then that may have been my fault. After I uploaded it to youtube, it DID take me a while to go to all the different sites and not only replace the old songs with the new ones, but also replace all the media fire download links with downloads of the updated songs. So you may have just downloaded the old songs by accident.

Whatever the reason, I'll definitely look into it. Thanks again for all the advice Wisp, even with my limited knowledge of music-termonoligy and mixing, It was EXTREMELY helpful =D

EDIT: after some searching, I found that Garageband does not support VSTs, but only AUs. I don't know if AU's are in anyway inferior or superior to VSTs, but according to the websites I looked up, they are the only plug-ins I can download that would work with the Mac iOS Garageband.

Both the ones I downloaded from EQBeats are 192 kbps (the original and re-mixed version). Didn't check the mediafire ones. You can test to see what kbps a sound file is just by putting it into iTunes, right-clicking the bar that says "name, time, artist, etc" and choosing for it to display kbps as well.

I believe VSTs are plugins that work on PCs (windows) and AUs are plugins that work on macs. AUs aren't superior or inferior to VSTs, but just a different format. If you can find an AU of the plugin you're looking for, you should be able to use it in your DAW just as well as a VST.
