Strange FL Experiments

Postby Interrobang Pie » 05 Jul 2011 15:57

Let's play let's help Interrobang Pie get better at FL!!!!!!! Woooooooo

http://soundcloud.com/interrobang-pie/epic-fire-man

Just some crappy unfinished Fire Man cover. I only recently discovered the joy of the Mixer so I am still getting the hang of plugins and what they do and how to use them. I also like to use Toxic Biohazard a lot... who knows why. ZFLP here.

I'm also trying to get to grips with remixing as a whole - right now this just sounds like the original but with different instruments and some strange fade-in intro.

Comments and criticism much appreciated. Give me your absolute worst.

I haven't heard the original song, so I'm not much to judge, but you seem to have drum sequencing down. But if you're looking to improve, the only way is to use no presets. I was stuck in a "pick a preset, make a lead, pick a bass, make a bassline, add drums, call it a day" phase for a LONG time in FL. Not using presets forces you to think a little more.

There's my two cents about FL, hope it's relevant, ahaha.

How do you go about not using presets?

By not using presets, I mean not choosing a sound from the built-in sounds on a synth. The best way to learn is experimentation, so start from a blank synth, and start messing with knobs until you get a timbre you like. Eventually, you'll figure out what certain knobs and sliders do, and you'll be able to construct what you have in your head instead of finding the closest patch to it.

OK. That's a good thing. Guess that bit wasn't relevant. As for remixing. When I do a remix, I either take the vocals or the absolute main hook and go around them. You don't want to replace the original instruments with synths and not change the arrangement, but make the arrangement into something new. Add new chords, different drums, variations on the melody, etc.
I really hope I'm not sounding preachy or anything like that. Just trying to give advice, which I'm no good at.

With help from PinkiePieSwear I am now an epic vocal mixer!!!!! Here's something I whipped up in 10 mins:

Vocal mixing is definitely easier than I anticipated - I will be lots of it sure to put it in one of my future songs!!!!!! (plus the users at EqD lap up vocals as much as they do repetitive music)

I haven't tried chopping/slicing with Edison. I use it mostly for timestretching acapellas, cause you can give the sample BPM information, then fit it to tempo in the playlist.
