Looking for livestreams and a teacher/guide

Postby Solipsus » 14 Aug 2013 01:26

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong spot, or already covered... I'm really tired and I've spent the better part of the last 2 hours just trying to figure out what to type.

In any case, I've given up on coming up with an eloquent way of putting this all out here so...

tl;dr - I'm bad at both people and music. I can't afford a shrink but it'd be grand if I could get some help with the second of those two things.

I've spent hours and hours watching/reading tutorials on pretty much everything I should need to get started making music, and it all makes perfect sense to me right up to the moment I actually try to use any of it. As soon as I get a short chord and drum pattern that I actually like going though, I get overwhelmed and just kinda sit there doing nothing constructive.

Are there any regular/scheduled livestreams that I might be able to watch, or perhaps somebody here who has the time/patience/expertise deal with my crap until I can figure out how to function by myself?

I apologize for my lack of tact here, as I'm usually very (very very) introverted and reclusive. I had to force myself to stop lurking on a guest account and actually register so I could post this. I really do need some guidance though, please.

I'm most interested in EDM. I'm not certain which sub-genre I like most, I suspect it might be house or DnB? I can enjoy just about any type of music though. And for anybody who I haven't managed to irritate or scare off yet... I can get skype or vent, or whatever works best for you. I don't usually talk unless somebody indicates that they're interested in conversing with me though. On the bright side however, I'm both very easygoing and receptive to any questions or advice that anybody might have for me!

Ah, i remember those days. back about three years ago, almost 4, when i first started producing my own tracks, i had the same problems. There's so much to producing that it can become quite overwhelming and confusing. I, myself, am still learning, but I think i could offer some assistance to help get you going on making your own music.

First off, its going to take awhile to figure out what your good at producing. When I first started making music in FL Studios, i wanted to make dance music too. Turns out, I'm not that good at it and i ran into several problems along the way.

If you take some time to listen to this piece, you'll notice that i had plenty of trouble mixing my music. Given I was using some cheap headphones, i couldn't really figure out how my bass was being mixed into the piece, and it ended up covering up most of my drums and other synths.

As time progressed, I figured out that making dance music wasn't really my style, but chillstep / ambient was more my type.

If you listen to that, you'll notice a huge difference in the quality of sounds, mixing, arrangement, ect.

Lol, i hope i haven't lost you yet. I know it may seem like im rambling on :P. Basically, its going to take time for you to figure out what your good at producing. Learning how to use your DAW is also a huge part of being able to produce quality music. Trust me, my first few tracks ( about 10 or so ) were complete crap. You've gotta have your mind set on wanting to make music in order to achieve what you want. Its nothing you can do overnight, it might take some time for you to get good. I usually spend several hours listening to loops, rearranging tracks, remaking melodies and beats just to get the track to sound the way i want to.

That being said, I'd be more than willing to teach you what i know about music production. I may not be the best teacher in the world, but I think i could help you get started with some basic arrangement, composition and other know hows. And since your using FL Studios, i could show you how to use your mixer, do some basic sidechaining and other effects.

If your interested, i'd recommend taking a look at my soundcloud page to see if my style of music would benefit you / help you learn how to become a better producer in general. http://soundcloud.com/fatcat44101

I'll check back later to see if your interested ^^. Hope i didn't bore you to much, lol.

Heh, you posted again while I was listening to your soundcloud.

I would love to learn anything you'd like to teach me. While it's not my all time favorite type of EDM I do still really love ambient and chill out type stuff.

Plus I'm a big sucker for anything with piano type sounds.

i'd be more than willing to teach you the basics of producing music. then you can take that knowledge and put it to work in your own music ^^.

caleb.b96 : that's my skype if you wanna message me there

[email protected] : that's my email too.

As for how im going to teach you, i kinda need to look into that. I don't have any kind of live stream software, so i'd have to figure that all out. I highly doubt it'll be hard though. send me an email / message when you can and we'll figure it all out.

Awesome, Skype for some reason doesn't play well with my sound card so I'll shoot you an e-mail.

Thank you!
