[Pony][Original] - Applejack is best pony

Postby SpiderPubes » 19 Mar 2013 06:22

Hey everyone, this is sort of my introduction and first song post? To be honest, I'm really nervous about posting on here, but hey here goes nothing..
I haven't been into producing very long, I've been trying to learn it seriously for just over 6 months now and well progress is pretty slow, but I thought I'd try my hand at some Pony stuff. -
This is my first attempt at vocal chopping too so of course it's far from perfect and well this is really just my first real attempt at everything and I'd love some criticisms, tips, tutorials etc. On how to get better, I'm open to most things and I love to learn. So without blabbing on anymore here's the first track I've properly done (also there's a bit of a muck up at 2:29 but yeah):

The splices are out of tune with everything else, you should probably either transpose the song to be in tune with the vocals or vice versa. You could transpose the vocals in melodyne, or newtone in FL, if you have either of those.

The instrumentals are pretty good, though. The drums are being drowned out in the beginning, but they're fine later on, so I assume that was intentional. It gets a bit monotone after a while, that's a big problem I know a lot of people have when they start, and I still have that problem xD. I'd recommend bringing out some of the lows in the mix, maybe add some stronger basslines, it feels kinda heavy in the highs and mids. And the outro could be better, the instrumentals lead up to it, but then it's just gone, so you should probably add a single synth hit on the downbeat and then just leave the rest of the measure empty. Another thing I'd recommend, make some changes in the melody or chords throughout the song, it's kind of repetitive as it is, I don't mind too much, but other people might. Another pretty good way to make things less repetitive is to change up the instruments every once and a while, maybe change that lead synth into something else, to change the mood?

Overall, for a first released song I'd say it's pretty good, and welcome to MLR! :)

Thankyou for the reply! - You're completely right with pretty much all of that.
The vocals could do with a lot of work, but I didn't exactly know how to go about doing that.
I'll keep that in mind for future tracks!

The drums being drowned out was intentional ;)
Mm yeah, I felt the same but I'm still new to all of this and I didn't really know how to expand on it and make it feel fuller and more diverse, if something sounds good to me I tend to not really expand on it more and I guess that's a bit of an issue.. I'll have to put more time and care into the overall structure in new tracks. Thankyou. :)

That's a good idea too, I guess I'll just have to put more time into things next time and make it more complete sounding. - Those are great suggestions and I appreciate it heaps, I'll use all of those tips in the future!
