[WIP][Dubstep][Pony] Weeee!

Postby nOk » 17 Jan 2013 10:23

So, I tried making dubstep in the past, and, i'll be honest. It sucked.

Because it's a WIP, I was experimenting with some things, so give me your honest opinion.

Also, the ring at the begining was something that got rendered in somehow, and ist in the track.

It's also not mixed well, yet. Don't worry about that. :)

ooooh dat intro :D sounds mighty fine. it all sounds good but the one problem i have is that there is a lot of treble/high frequencies in the synths n stuff. now this might just be personal preference but i think too many high frequencies make the song sound kinda..... sharp...or like..... idunno how to say but it just sounda bit cheesy isn? i dunno. especially with this being a dubstep i think that there should be a lot more notable bass than treble.

Take my advice with a grain of salt as i too am learning how this music stuff works

It sounds great, but the growls and modulated basslines that are usually supposed to be the center of attention, aren't.

yeah, I know. Part of that is because when I render it the levels get all funked up for some reason. I'll try to fix that soon :)

what do you hear as the center of attention right now? I've started the mixing/mastering, so what should I lower the most to make some room?

Well, starting at 0.58, you'd want to lower the sound of the bass melody that's playing over the growl and increase the volume of the growl to pull it to the front and attention of the listener. As well as the regular (sine wave?) wub that connects the growls at some parts. The bass melody you have playing at the drop from 0.58 should really be at the back. The higher pitched transition melody and wub could probably be a bit louder as well, but other than that, it sounds great.

Yeah in the first one the drop was a little too quiet, but you definitely fixed that in the update. The modulated basslines were there, prominent, but backed by a melody, which sounded really good.

Perfect, I really like how it sounds now. Um, I guess the only problem I see with it is that the transition or filler melody, whichever you want to call it, the saw/square wave synth that first plays at 1.13 is a bit quiet, so that could probably go up in volume about 5% on the mixer, but other than that, it's really good

I like the way the intro goes, with that nice piano melody. One thing you may want to change is to build up a little more tension in the song before the drop so it's a sharper contrast when it finally comes. You know, something like building up the speed of the drums or building up the notes higher and higher and then releasing it with the drop. Just a suggestion.

The only other thing is that you seem to drift all over the place as far as what you're doing with the synths and the bass growls and the like. I can't hear a whole lot of returning bits that create a sort of memorable motif. However, mine is not the most discerning ear, so forgive me if i'm missing something musically that you're doing.

But it does sound pretty good already, I like how the vocal samples are integrated into the song.
My goal is to be capable of making any kind of music that strikes my fancy, and do it well.

Noted :)

Yeah, I've noticed that I'm zipping around too much musically with this. Something I want to do is maybe move some parts around to make it all come together more in the final product. I'm thinking that if I balance the song out more, the "motif", as you put it, will stick out more.

(Also, thanks for the feedback, guys. It's helpin' me out a lot!)

Wholly crap nOk i love your melody creation, and dem wubs wernt bad either!
I would suggest working on some mastering since i feel like its a little muddy in the mid-low frequencies, all in all its an awesome start

wanna like, work together sometime? ;D

Alright, my turn! And let this be noted this is my first time giving feedback.. So take it with a grain of salt.

I feel quite honestly, that the starting melody was fantastic, great lead in, but then the build up doesn't really exist as Sonarch said, it needs more tension, more room for the listener to know it's coming.

Also, I'm not too sure if I'm the only one who feels this, and it might be just me (because I love kicks/snares being powerful), but I felt that they were actually, underwhelming, not enough power on them. I can hear them clearly, but it seems like they're at the bottom of the mix, when they should be somewhere in the middle (remember, grain of salt!)

Anyways, overall I enjoyed the whole piece, but I feel there can definitely be some work done.

The samples I'm using are being drowned out a bit. The kick is ok, I think, but the snare could be raised some yeah. I've done some mastering and cleaned up muddiness all around, so they sound a bit clearer now.

I doubt I'll post another WIP as I don't have much more to do on it structure wise. All I need is an ending and some more changes in general. For the most part it's done, but there's still some work to do (especially with that first drop!)

(Also I took out one of the instruments and it made a HUGE improvement I feel. Try to listen for it :) )
