Luna's Nightmare

The name can be changed still, but I like Luna's Nightmare

I know where I am going with this definitely, and I would love feed back. I am nowhere near done... I want to extend it out to at least 3 minutes.

I would also love to post a short description, but I want to get back to writing.

Everything in this song falls under what I have learned in high school music theory. I can only imagine what will be possible after four years majoring in music. o.O

This one is great. Bear in mind I normally don't like orchestral shit.

This is very strong! Enjoying he progress, and the volume/tempo pickup was a nice choice. I think it may get a little too quite in some parts, though.

EDIT: I am likely WAY in over my head. Time to grow taller.

First of all, thanks a lot for the comments.
Second, this is taking a while because I am treading into new territory as far as composition goes. I have never tried extending out a piece and I am still not sure how to... but it seems to be working so far.
Thirdly, Here is some progress I have made... I recently learned what an exposition is and I apparently am still writing an exposition for this piece. If anyone who actually knows what sonata form is can tell me if I am doing it correctly or not, it would be super helpful. EDIT: apparently the second group has to keep themes from the first group in an exposition working on that right now. Edit: I feel I need a more detailed transition first.

edit: the embed in the main post seemed to update so I won't post it over and over again.

I am still filling in some inner parts, deciding what phrases I am going to use, making sure I like the melody and bass in terms of counterpoint and what not, etc. (technical babbling etc.)

I have been trying to write it but I keep playing WoW, Trying to find a time to finish listening to the planets, reading new forum posts (for this forum of course), and refreshing equestria daily.

Comments are always greatly appreciated.

If you're following a strict sonata form, then the second theme should be in the dominant. I didn't hear it move to there, although I could be mistaken! But that wouldn't matter too much, sonata form has been used and abused so much (to great effect!)!

But this is sounding great! Looking forward to the development/recapitulation!

I read that minor often shifts into it's relative major rather than into it's dominant key. I decided to go with that via a deceptive progression.

Ah right, yes, that works too! Well, it's sounding great! :)

I'm looking forward to seeing what this sounds like when you're done. You've got a pretty excellent start, as far as I can tell. It definitely sounds like it's moving forward with a unified and focused purpose, which is more than I can say for my songs. It's beautiful!

I have been freaking out about sonata form... I have been trying different stuff to get into the second group... which at first I thought was my major part near the end of what I currently have written out. It turns out a good ol' friend of mine, my brain, wasn't there yet and was doing what it was supposed to do even though I didn't know it. It was making an awesome transition to GET to the second group... GAH! at least one of us has some good sense.

edit: instead of continuing I am going to listen to and look at some of my favorite Mozart sonatas for inspiration and technical guidance.

My favourite example of sonata form is the first movement of Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra"

The difference is the recapitulation is in reverse order! Exposition starts at 3.03 and ends at 5.25, maybe it'll give you some inspiration, or ideas into structure!

Thanks.

I am about to go to Opera workshop and try to get my brony friend into making music.

For now though, updates:

I have gotten a little further. Ideas keep swarming through my head and I am trying to figure out a way to make them happen.

The material I am working on now is a bit goofy for my tastes, but I like it. I guess that is what happens when you think of Trollestia?

I am still working out dynamics and in some places I am taking a while to think things through before I throw them on paper but I want to squeeze out as much quality as I can.

I'll update the OP with sheet music and a soundcloud embed, but here they are!

Feel free to point out any so called "part writing errors" I know about the augmented intervals (I usually always avoid them at any cost but the song doesn't seem the same without them), but I don't have time to check it up and down right now for direct fifths and parallel octaves and such.

I might expand this song out later too... but it's not on my mind
