<non-pony> <WIP> <Dubstep> Let's Fetch Some Souls

Postby Mondogreen » 28 Oct 2012 16:53

Howdy everypony! I guess I'll introduce myself real quick. I'm Mondogreen. I was recently featured on the Simplicity is Key compilation album. Over the past 10 months, I've been learning as much as I can about sound design/arrangement etc. with the goal of having a free EP out by Christmas. I've been improving steadily, and I'm finally at the stage where I feel confident enough to start showing off what I'm all about musically. My ponysona's name is Decibel, and boy does he have one hell of a backstory.... anyway, feel free to check out my soundcloud and leave some feedback, requests etc.. you guys are awesome, and this fandom is insane!

Hi Mondogreen, welcome to the forum! Have a nice time here :)

The first thing I want to say, is that Holy Luna that bass (as said by that soundcloud commenter) is freaking nasty! Like,so dirty it contorts my face. Nice job on that. And I like the piano too, it has a haunting feel to it.
And here come the "But..."s.
I think the snare should be centered, not panned. And needs more punch.Maybe there's too much reverb on it too. Try layering different snare samples, one with more punch, one with more rattle and air, or something like that. Or just get one really good snare sample. That works too.
Speaking of drums, the rest I think is fine. The kick is good, audible and punchy, and the hi hat pattern is
interesting, but some parts of it could be more louder. And panning could make it even more interesting.

The track is centered around the bass, actually. I spent a good 3 hours one morning messing around in Massive and once the wobble pattern was established, everything else just kinda fell into place. I agree 100% on your mixing critiques. I save most of my EQ work for finished tracks for the sole reason that... well, I don't get a lot of tracks done, but it could use some more kick and snare, and on a more recent version (not uploaded) I added just a touch of delay and reverb to the bassline and piano and that did a good job of gluing the whole thing together.

Thank you for the welcome! I'm really excited to start giving back to the community.
