<WIP> <Not-yet-pony> <Original> Need urgent help...

Postby GumsOfGabby » 19 Sep 2012 12:07

Hey guys. Just spent a good portion of the past couple of days fiddling with stereo separation (mid/side channels) and using sends to cut out the lower 'side' frequencies. I'm not sure if this has any positive effect on my tracks, but I'm experimenting with it anyway.

This little snippet is the product of 16+ hours of studio brainstorming, mixing and trying to work my way around the impossible-to-grasp concept of stereo separation.

To me, the electro chords just sound awkward when paired with the sub and bass (+1 oct of sub). Can you guys hear the "awkwardness", or is it just my ears.

Would appreciate absolutely any feedback at all on this, because I really want to get this separation non sense worked out. Been driving me nuts for the past 6 or so months...

Thanks everypony!

I hear the sub, but I don't think it sounds too bad. I think the track is mixed wonderfully, so keep doing whatever you're doing. It could be that it's too clear, because sometimes a bit of muddiness helps mesh things and bring it together. I don't even have a well-trained ear and I can pick out the sub clearly, so that might be why it sound awkward.

Or perhaps try to bring in something subtle to cover up the obviousness of the sub. I know some people see pads as unorthodox in electro house, but it's an option. Ambient/atmospheric FX maybe?

This is really nice electro house, btw. I can never get my synths to sound that good.

Wow. Your synth sounds are really good. I also like your perc mixing in general. From about 15 to 45 it sounds like your lead is side chained just a bit too much as it sounds like youre squashing a bit of sound. But this is REALLY good.

I wasn't really referring to the sub being overly loud, I was more concerned about how the stereo image of track sounded. For some reason non of the instruments seem to gelling. It could be what you said. Thanks for the suggestion of adding a pad. I've managed to fit one in and it's sounding better now :D

Without splitting hairs on the things I personally hear wrong with it, this is fabulous. Maybe some slight refinement on the sub like some detune to create interesting sound with the separation you're aiming for. I'm completely terrible with subsounds, so that could be a bad idea. I'm just comparing what I hear to others who have done sub that I like.

I love this breed of electro/filter house, either way.

Thanks, I'll give that idea a try. And, if you don't mind, what did you find wrong with the track? I'd really like to know, the more criticism the better! Do you have a WIP or track you'd like me to critique?

Oh, just the drums sounded a bit stock to me at the moment. Specifically the hats. You're not done so I don't know if they're changing or not. That's what I meant by splitting hairs. They sound perfect, but the actual choice doesn't personally sit well with me. And if you want to look over some stuff, my soundcloud link below links to my main stuff. I have a few finished and a few rough and a few wip all over the place. I'm always going from idea to idea.

Okay, thanks for pointing that out. I've changed up the hat samples along with a few other I added after uploading to soundcloud.

Checking out your stuff now!

I say it needs more flow. The main melody of the song sounds really choppy, some better progression is in order. Could use more pads.
