<WIP> <Original> Out of Nowhere

Postby Sgt-Whip (DJQ) » 28 Jun 2012 22:27

Probably the first time I've ever posted a WIP on this site. I'm not really at the stage where I want to show off the whole production of the song I'm working on, so I was going to share a dropbox link here with a fairly long sample to give the gist of how the song goes. Dropbox link ahead!

(Link is dead)

I would love to receive some feedback. I guess my biggest concern is, does this track have the high energy appeal that most drumstep and dubstep has, or no? I've listened to it too many times to not be biased. I'm also wondering if the kicks have enough presence, or if they're pushing down the rest of the track too much, or what have you. And anything else anybody would like to say on the track would be great to hear. I'll be very thankful for it.

Edit/Update: The link to the preview has been deleted after having made some serious updates to the track since its first post. Thanks to everyone who helped out. I'll create a new thread for the when the track is complete.

i think in order to give it that drumstep feel that youre so close to reaching, is in the drums, theres 2 things i would reccomend, 1 would be to use an equalizer to boost the kick/snare, or to take 2 snares/2 kicks, one from the high frequency and one from the low frequency to give the drums a fuller sound. the other sugestion would to then use sidechain compressing on the non drum instruments to have them duck out a small ammount in order to let the drums come to the front some more!
otherwise its got some good potential to be a drumstep/dubstep head banging song song!

Thanks for the words. The good news is thanks to others' feedback, I've already done all you've said!

I am actually already side-chain compressing in the sample you listened to. If I compress the sound anymore, then the instruments will start to duck out completely during the kicks, changing the feel of the song in a way I am not going for. However, I have pumped the volume on the kicks without peaking them, so good news on that!

Thanks for helping out!

What this really needs is some more maximizing/compression. Everything is too quite, and it doesn't fill the sound spectrum as much as it should. I suggest looking at compressors (endorphin is pretty good, and I think it's free) and giving that a go.

Thanks for the advice, though I have done a lot since this sample.
