<WIP><Cover>"Smile Song (Rock Version)" - need feedback

Postby 0neTr1ckP0ny » 28 May 2012 11:54

Hi Everyone,

I've been working on a rock version of "Smile Song", but I'm not quite sure it is ready for prime time yet, and I could use some feedback.

It took me quite a while to come up with an arrangement that I liked, and also to find a good isolated vocal track (thanks MrMusicalPony on YouTube!). But then the track had no backing vocals and no choir at the end. So I used some DAW magic to recreate the backing vocal track, and used the original MLP recording for the choir part at the end. Some of the original instrumentation bleeds through, but I did my best to cover it up.

Anyway, I could use some input on whether the track is good as is or needs more work. :D

Thanks,
One Trick Pony

EDIT:
The final version has been posted.

Not bad. Not bad at all, just...

It sounded like alien pinkie to me :S Maybe you're better off without backing vocals. And did you high pass the choir in the end?

Thanks for the feedback!

I think the part where Alien Pinkie really comes through is the end of the second chorus... for some reason the pitching there sound really odd and forced, while it worked fine in the rest of the song. I'm always reluctant to take the backing vocals out entirely (I use lots of vocals harmonies in my own music too), but I'll try to mix it so the "alien" part is less apparent.

I didn't do any filtering on the choir; the music is pretty well covered and I edited out the parts with no singing (few as they are). There was mostly just a high trumpet in one bit that really rang through, which I tried to cover with an additional guitar. I'll see if a bit of filtering cleans things up.

Thanks again!
